I agonized about which pocket sized gun to buy for a while. My indoor range is also a good sized gun shop and rents guns. Problem is it didn't have my finalists to rent. I narrowed the list to a 9mm in the smallest size (except the $1000 Rohrbach), my finalists were the Kahr PM/CM 9 and the Sig P290 and P938.

I had ruled out the Nano and Kimber Solo because of reviews about pickiness with ammo, both fit my size criteria perfectly. I ruled out the Ruger LC9 because of the trigger (and I have a SR9 which I don't shoot well). The other brands available DB, Keltec etc. I don't know and couldn't see at the gun shop.

After some dry firing I ruled out the Kahrs because of their long trigger pull and reset. Then was down to the Sigs, the newer, lighter and more attractive P938 SA or the older, heavier and uglier P290 DAO. I liked the 290 because of the way the heavier weight and longer grip felt in my hand. (same height and thickness considering safety on P938). I also considered the potential issues with a P938 - an external hammer and safety in a pocket carry situation. I chose the Sig P290 and bought her on 12/31.

I was dying to see how she shot so I started 2014 with a quick shooting expedition in the less than ideal cold.

FWIW the Sig P290 shoots like a bigger gun in terms of recoil and has real sights, I feel the little Sig is more accurate than my bigger Ruger SR9. Here are reloads I shot after a couple of mags of factory 115gr: (it was very cold and I wore gloves) - 25 feet semi-slow fire 6+1 then the 7 round mag - into a 2" circle.

This is a real keeper! My only complaint thus far is the reset is a bit long. The trigger feels similar to a DA revolver - similar but lighter than my S&W 686.

Add on to post above:

The gun shop I bought from had the Si gP 938 black with rosewood colored grip for $719 which only comes with 1 6 round mag. The P 290 I bought came with a Sig Laser, a second mag 7 rounder, and a Sig OWB kydex holster for $550. Price was not the determining factor, I really wanted to buy the P938 but reason told me the P290.

No hiccups whatsoever, she ate, shot and ejected 115gr cheapo factory ammo and my RN Lead reloads, 124 gr with Bullseye powder 4.0 gr at OAL 1.150.

Thanks for the review.

Have you decided what carry ammo you will use?

The Rohrbaugh can be picky, although most people say they never have problems with 124gr Gold Dots, and I was hoping that my R9 would reliably cycle Winchester Ranger "T" Series. It does, and I practice with 147gr Lawman TMJs

The Lawman has very similar recoil impulse to the Winchester, so I just like to practice with that.

When I held the P290 it felt like the weight was forward, it felt muzzle heavy, which probably accounts somewhat for it feeling like it shoots like a bigger gun than it is.

Congrats on your new carry gun. You picked a good one. I have the SIG P229 for one of my house guns. Enjoy
