Everything we need as far as gun and calibers are concerned; were available by 1935.
1955 if one chooses to add the .44 Magnum.

It is said the only constant is change.

So a criminal uses a screwdriver to kill someone in a dark alley purchased in 2009 from a Box Store. This screwdriver has a magnetic tip, handle made of synthetic material which is more comfortable and ergonomic to use.

Dead is dead.

Just as dead as the victim taken down in a alley in 1930 , with a screwdriver purchased at a mom and pop hardware store, with a wooden handle.

It has all been said before.

Don't go where trouble is, evade if trouble shows up, and have mindset, and skillsets to deal with trouble.

Mindset. Skillset. Toolset.

The criminal in 1930 had a mindset to take down a victim. This criminal had the skill sets to take down a victim. Tools, might be that screwdriver purchased from a mom and pop hardware store. Then again it could be a baseball bat, hammer, scrap piece of lumber...etc.

Anti-Gun, and Anti-Self Reliant folks will never understand it is the intent of a user of a tool, and not the tool itself.
One is wise to save time and energy in dealing with Antis, or anyone that does not want "it".

Instead, use time and energies on those that want "it" , including fence sitters.

The intended victim with Mindset,Skillset and using one tool from the self reliant tool box, a 1929 Colt Detective Special, or S&W Hand Ejector, in .38spl, is just as armed in 2009 as they were in 1930.

It has all been said before.

A new rookie cop in 1930 was told in the Academy, and reminded by the Seasoned Cop he rode with "get persons out of the kitchen to interview them during a domestic dispute".

In 2009 a rookie cop is taught the same thing in the Academy, and reminded by the Seasoned Cop they ride with as preceptor.

It does not matter if the set of knives are 1930 Dexter, or Old Hickory, or 2009 Heinkels.

Knives in the kitchen will cause serious injury, maim, even death. It does not matter who makes them, what steel, or how these are sharpened.

It does not matter if the person came home drunk from drinking moonshine whiskey, or bathtub gin hidden in a furniture polish bottle, or had too much Korbel Brut champagne ...
Drunk + Knives + mindset to do harm to a spouse/family and responding Police = a seriously dangerous situation.

This is the Strategy & Tactics sub-forum.

New folks join up, and one would be wise to read, and get a feel for what Strategy & Tactics are truly defined as being.

While the only constant is change, Mindset. Skillset. Toolset are in the order they are for a reason.

You can have a 2009 pistol, holster, ammo, and one hand assist knife that locks.
If you do not have Mindest, and Skillset in your tool box, in that order, then some street punk will take you down with a 1930 screwdriver obtained from a yard sale, estate sale, or just found in discarded trash.

It has all been said before.

Yup, the fast or slow debate has been around since 1896 with the successful introduction of the .30 Mauser 7.63x25 (or even earlier if you count the 1893 Borchardt).

Arguments between light & fast versus big & slow existed well over 100 years ago. Idiotic "which is best" discussions about magic bullets are not just a symptom of today.

I love to read sm's posts ... I've gone to the Member's list and called up all his posts to read just for fun, more than once ... but gotta laugh sometimes at his pose of ancient wisdom, when he was only born in 1955. In 1955 I was out of high school, struggling to fund a college program, engaged to the girl I've now been married to for 50 years last December, and trying to make do with no one to pay forward to me, with a lonely Ruger Standard Mark I bought with nights of lost sleep and low pay as a newpaper delivery punk, as my only shooter.
Steve (hope you don't mind the familiarity) us old guys love to read the stuff you kids write!!!! We don't comment often: don't have to, you do just fine by the ancient wisdom for us. :)

I dunno, I like the .40 S&W. Which is, of course, essentially identical to the .38-40. :p

Of course, I bet people back in the '30s liked to buy the latest and greatest guns of their time rather than work on marksmanship and situational awareness, as well.
