Question on M37 firing pin cock:

Cycling the action on my 1940 M37 12ga does not cock the firing pin unless there are shells in the magazine, whereas cycling my 1961 M37 20ga will cock the trigger and dry-fire with an empty magazine. Otherwise, both guns load, shoot and eject perfectly.

Have I assembled the 1940 12ga incorrectly - or is it missing parts - or was there a change in the mechanical design?

Frank

I was given a Model-37 12ga made in 1940. It has no bluing left on it, just a nice, brown patina. It is the slickest, most pointable shotgun I've ever owned.

1938

Dos the checkering come up and over the gript to meet at a point?
Otherwise the stock is a replacement
Thanks Bushmaster. The checkering does meet on top...maybe 3/4". She is in such condition that 1938 is really a streech...the serial number may indicate that, but the barrel is detachable from the receiver, which made me ask. On the barrel, beneath and to the right of MOD, but above the serial is the number -2....I assume indicating a MOD barrel. Then below that is the 4 digit serial. The serial on the receiver is on the forward edge, covered by the barrel when it is in place. Could this have been one that the factory modified for an interchangeable barrel?

Model 37 Questions

Recently I aquired my Fathers gun collection. In it is a model 37 20 ga. that I would like some info on.
the serial number is 381872

what can anyone tell me about this gun. from what I have found this is mainly a bird gun. is this correct? is there a barrel that can be placed on it for deer hunting?

Does anyone know if Ithaca ever made a 14" barrel for the 37's or the 87?
I've heard of 13" but not 14"..... also does anyone know what the choke is on the 13"
Thanks, LH

the serial number is 381872

1951 manufacture.

As for being a bird gun, most 37s are probably used for that purpose, but slugs can be used in most...... perhaps a full choke wouldn't be the best choice for slugs, but other chokes should be ok - just don't expect accuracy to be as good as with a rifled barrel.

Changing the barrel would be expensive on your M37 because the guns before ~ 855500 had barrels that were fitted to the receiver. You could have it done, but it would be expensive and probably better to buy another gun for deer hunting.

I hate to be too big a bother, but I recently inherited an Ithaca model 37 from my father... This was the first and only gun I hunted with, but since I was only around 14 at the time I started hunting, I don't really know anything about it other than how to load and fire it.

I'd like to know any information any of you can give on it... The serial number, I THINK, is 699443-2... But this is located on the barrel. I would have thought the serial number would be on the receiver or stalk - but there's nothing there.

I don't rightly know how to clean this gun, though I may have someone that can teach me how. Unfortunately, my dad never taught me how when I was a kid. If all else fails, if anyone can provide a diagram as to how to tear it down to clean it, I'd appreciate it.

Assuming the serial number is correct, when was this gun made? I know it's a 20 gauge, I know it's a model 37 featherlight... Beyond that, I know very little.

I thank you for any information you can provide, both requested and anything I should know that I didn't ask about. Keep in mind, this is the first gun that I've owned; I know the safety stuff, but maintaining a gun is something I'm unfamiliar with. It likely will not be used very much though, it's more a family heirloom to me.

I would have thought the serial number would be on the receiver or stalk - but there's nothing there.

With gun unloaded look from the muzzle end to the front of the receiver.
serial number should be there

You need to take the the stock off to remove the trigger group from the back of the receiver

Bushmaster, would I be correct in saying that the serial number is on the barrel, right next to the receiver? If so, the serial number I posted last night is correct.

37 Ithaca

Hello all just got a 37 Ithaca 16 gauge for Christmas been waiting for 23 years so safe to say I was excited! The serial numbers are 698230 on receiver and 698230-2 on barrel. Any info would be greatly appreciated maybe what year and if anyone knows what choke may be on the gun mod or full? Thanks for all the help!

Your Model 37 was born in 1937. Look on the left side of the barrel for the choke - should be stamped Full, Mod or ICYL.

I have a 12ga made in 1940 and a 20ga made in 1961...... a 16ga would be very nice to have.

100 bucks for a model 37?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You did not buy that SG you stole it!

Period - Case closed!

Hello all

Hello all,
My stepfather is passing his 37 down to me. serial # 1849982 engraved reciever, round fore end, plain full choke barrel. Stepdad at 78 says it was his fathers, And I dated it at 1969 could I have misread ? If not are deer barrels available for this. I'm excited the gun is very clean.
Just had to do an edit. That was the patent # on the barrel. The ser# 201xxx so I will look that DOM up. I will post some pics of this 37.
Thanks Robert
