I have inherited an Iver Johnson revolver with the serial no. 44730 on the underside of the trigger guard, Model No. PT 6.04 on the underside of the butt and a manufacturing date of June 6 96 - Aug 26 96, Owl head checkered grips, weight 13.2 oz. It is in fair condition. Can anyone give me some history and possible value of this revolver?

I would recommend perusing gunbroker.com to get a feel of what your pistol is worth. It'll likely fall into the $125 - $200 range depending on condition, including grips.

Go to this site:

Scroll down the manufacturers list on the right until you come to the two Iver Johnson entries, I'm pretty sure your gun is covered.
Iver Johnson was a prolific manufacturer of mid quality small firearms under their own and a variety of trade names. Your gun is almost certainly designed for use with blackpowder cartridges and should not be shot with modern smokeless ammunition.

Blackpowder has a slower pressure curve than smokeless powder and blackpowder guns often lack the strength to handle the fast pressure spike from a smokeless cartridge. Often these older guns are really iron rather than steel, so for safetys sake don't shoot it with modern ammo unless you have ensured it is from the 20th century and not the 19th.
