Long time lurker, first time poster...

I'm a big believer in hammerless J Frames for CCW and BUGs - they simply can do certain things I believe are very important that an auto cannot.

I carry a 442 no-lock and for the first time was able to compare it to the competition - in this case, the Ruger LCR. I was surprised to discover the LCR fit my hand better because its grip places the trigger further from my palm, which my index finger found much more comfortable.

To your knowledge, is there a manufacturer which produces J Frame grips with extended backstraps for this reason?

The extra length such a backstrap would create isn't a concealment issue for me, as I carry OWB, not in the pocket.

Thanks for any insight.

Steve

Try Hogue Grips for both wood and rubber grips that offer a longer overall length for the J frame.

If it has a round butt, then these should work for you.
I have a set on a S&W M317; improves shooting a lot.

Also, these cost $7.99.

Smith and Wesson makes one and sells it on their web site. This is the rubber grip they supply stock on their J-frame magnum revolvers. I ordered the S&W grip from their web site and have in my .38 Special 638 J-frame. The S&W grip adds about 3/8 of an inch of rubber over the entire back strap. Highly recommended. Adds about 1/2 inch to the bottom of the grip so your pinky has a place to hang on (which really helps reduce muzzle flip).

Try Herret's grips. Here is a pair on my Model 36. It covers the metal on the grip and makes holding it much easier.

Altamont grips make some beautiful wooden grips for the same price range as the pacmayers, though I do like pacmayers.

Pachmayr

Pachmayr 05136 Decelerator and Pachmayr 03252 Compac will fill your bill.
http://www.pachmayr.com They also soak up recoil better than grips made of harder material including harder rubber. My personal preference is the Compac because they fit my hand better and the pinky detent feels really nice.

Its all a trade off. I like the boot grip on my J frames for shooting. For carrying, I go for the standard factory wood grips. I have used a Tyler grip adapter in the past, but, today my 649 is equipped with the factory configuration it came with in the late 80s. I have medium to smaller hands so that's not a real problem. Larger feels better ~ smaller conceals better ~ both get the job done.
