I happened upon a JC Higgins Model 60 at a gun store a couple of weeks ago. Price was around $190; it seemed to be in decent shape mechanically, though the finish was well-worn and thin. How is that price? I might pick it up if they still have it the next time I go by there.

In considering buying it, I was curious on whether it was possible to put an extension on the magazine, just for grins and giggles. How easy or hard would this be?

Thanks.

I don't know the difficulty of a magazine extension on that but IIRC those were made for Sears by High Standard. You could look up the corresponding model of High Standard and see what's available for those. I think Gun Parts Corp. may still have info on their web site to tell you what High Standard called that model but I would guess there's not a lot of aftermarket stuff available for it because they're not that common. Might be better off just cleaning it up and leaving it somewhat original. If you wanted something with a mag extension for HD or just grins you could pick up a used Mossberg 500 or Rem. 870 and find tons of aftermarket stuff for it.

Thank you. I was aware of the High Standard connection, and have looked at Numrich for parts. Nothing there.

I've already got an 870. I just have a fondness for the old JC Higgins guns. If I can't extend the magazine, that's fine. It would just be fun. I like the idea of making something old like that more "tactical". Just for my own amusement.

Anyone else have any insight or information?

My uncle had a model 60 JC Higgins 12 ga auto. it had a polychoke and vent rib. it was a deluxe gun in the eyes of a 15 year old. I shot it a skeet and did real well with it, when I was about 14 and had a bunch of old farts with fancy over unders and fancy shooting vest giving me the evil eye. I had that choke screwed wide open. I shot in the low 20's. the gun had a broken action arm in later years which a local gunsmith repaired. However my uncle told me that someone broke into his house and the gun was stolen and never recovered. I still have the owners manual stashed in with all my gun manuals!

Bull

I still have my Dad's JC Higgins 12ga. Yes it is a High Standard. I will pull it out tomorrow and find the model number. It has the poly choke. It is a heavy gun, has a lot of recoil especially compared to my Beretta. It is still in very nice condition, I rarely shoot it. The best part of the gun? Memories of being with my Dad.
