Everyone qualifies with the M16 these days. I've been out for 5 years so things may have changed, but we had to requalify annually. I think there are three "tiers" of weapons qualification standards (something like security police in tier 1 who qualify every few months, ops group people in tier 2 who qualify annually, and miscellaneous chair force office weenies in tier 3 who qualify every 2 or 3 years), but I am pretty vague on that so perhaps there are some Combat Arms people on the forum who can clarify.

I had to recertify once a month for my "real" job, which was F-16C/D weapons loader. GBU-28 make big bada boom

The AF has gone through a lot of changes (and come full-circle on many of them) since the early 1990s. Everything from what seemed like annual uniform changes, to top-down restructuring of entire commands. And all of that while being constantly underfunded and undermanned, with units (mostly mine it seemed) being sent on wall-to-wall endless rotations to the desert for OSW/ONW. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Anyway, glad to see more real combat skills being taught in BMT. I remember when the kids started coming through in '99 talking about their experiences during "warrior week", and the rest of us were like "Huh?". Kinda sorry I missed out. They've been talking about adding two more weeks to Basic for as long as I can remember.

When I was in the air force.....

we didn't need no stinking rifles......that was what the 1.1meg nuke cruise missiles under the wings of a B52 were for.......Air force basic was a joke back in 1965. I was in a flight of mostly intercity city boys that smoked like chimneys. It was funny during PT. You never heard so much wheezing in all your life. I shot a M16 in basic and for SE Asia deployment. When I returned stateside, the base I went to only had M1 carbines which I qualified three years then did not shoot after that. I am glad to see some combat training for the air force. The military is alot like police forces with respect to firearms. You have the few shooters and the rest are just lead throwers......chris3
