Journalistic Language Challenge

Liberal students want to change the system. They see journalism as a tool to accomplish that."

Rent the Doris Day DVD from the late 50s "Teacher's Pet". It clearly shows the transition from the old style journalism of "reporting the facts" to "reporting the why."

And now with decades of liberal dominance it is much harder for that conservative journalist to even get that first break. People tend to hire people that are like them, and city desk editors are no different. They can't base it on race or gender anymore but by God, they certainly can hire people who think they same way they do.

Kind of Blued,

I'll address you tomorrow. Right now I'm just tired.

I understand you're trying to help us understand where these people are coming from, and that's appreciated. I guess it is possible that we may be as stubborn or more in not comprehending ignorance of the issues at hand.

I think that most gunnies are very respectful of power; things like their own guns, their vote, and the like. I also think they become unusually perturbed when they see individuals abusing power for personal reasons. This a huge generalization, of course, but I'm tired too.

I apologize for my absence. I got my magazine done and went through my usual three days of stress-induced illness afterward...

I am beginning to feel human again.

Honestly, I'm just trying to help shooters understand why these folks don't understand us. I do not like the situation. I wish it were different.

But, if we want to advance our agenda we must know the agenda of those who oppose us.

I've invited an editor who hates guns to go shooting over the weekend and he accepted. The sad truth is we have to win them over one at a time.

I see it both ways. The people I work with are gun haters. I never go to work without at least a .32 in my pocket.

I would really like to see both sides come together, but the one thing I am sure of is that I can't do it alone.

Anti-gun-owners will never be convinced that guns are actually harmless in the hands of educated gun owners.

But, if gun owners take an anti-journalism stance we will lose the debate.

If you choose to argue with someone who buys printer's ink by the barrel you will lose. (Paraphrased from Benjamin Franklin.)

I am not defending journalists either. Simply trying to explain why they are who and what they are is fruitless.

Why they are not of another stripe? Proper English must be a priority in the home. A child must be raised to speak and write the language in its most basic form from the time they are born.

My son, who is much smarter than I am, may be able to carry the fight to the next generation. He is only 6 but can shoot an 8-inch group out of his .22 rifle. He also knows that his words carry much more impact than his marksmanship.

The boy has already been kicked up a grade and he's only in second grade. But, he's a shooter. He'll be kicked up a grade again next year and by then he'll be ripping the center out of a 50-foot target.

My generation has already lost.

IMHO, ignorance is very easy to spread.

I know I'm taking an at-odds position here - don't care.

If I have one thing to express, it is help me make sure my sons have the same rights I had when I grew up.

Do you think it is realistic that we have a site dedicated to conservative journalists who would like to see honest reporting about gun ownership?

There are so few of us it hurts...

Here's my problem with journalists. They'd rather tell a good story than the truth. I don't have the links, but I remember seeing a story about how a Reuters reporter had two ambulance drivers POSE with the body of a dead girl on a stretcher in the West Bank so he could get the dramatic picture. They had to haul her corpse out of the ambulance and then act like they were just putting her in. I've seen cases where reporters photoshopped extra smoke into a burning village to make it more horrific looking. I remember reporters giving John Kerry a "take two" after what he said in take one sounded confusing and ignorant. This is activist journalism and it's got to stop.

Assault rifle refers to scary looks, not functionality, power, accuracy, round capacity, mode of fire, mode of reload, speed of fire, speed of reload, caliber, usable range, or any other aspect of a firearm beyond aesthetic appreciation?
Incorrect. "Assault rifle" is a real term with a quantifiable definition:

  • Handy size and configuration for close combat.
  • Chambered for an "intermediate" cartridge such as 7.62x39mm or 5.56x45mm.
  • Capable of both semi-auto and full-auto (or burst) firing.

There may be other criteria, but those are the most important.

"Assault weapon" on the other hand is a made up propaganda term with no fixed meaning, which can cover everything from a handgun to a submachinegun and everything in between.

The ignorant and liars use the two interchangeably.

Back in the late '80s, I worked for a major TV station in New England. I was one of only two people I know of that were into guns (the other being the daytime Security Guard).

I offered my help to the News Editor in reporting gun related stories after I watched a news report about someone arrested "with thousands of rounds of ammunition" - the camera panning over to show a belt of .308 BLANKS.

Loop:

I'm not sure that you can convince me, on a rational basis, that I will lose against a journalist, who buys ink by the barrel, when I can repeatedly and demonstrably prove that the journalist is irrational and biased.

I would propose that time is on our side.

I don't think our generation is lost. I think more Americans, daily re-discover their Bill of Rights.

The Internet holds a greater influence than paper publications. With a national population that is largely dissatisfied with politics, I would propose that many Americans have developed a heightened sensitivity to any proposal to diminish rights.

Is an AK pistol an assault rifle?

Is a Civil War era musket an assault rifle? It is certainly military, and many come with bayonets.

The venerable M44 is hardcore military, was standard issue, also had a bayonet, and has not been altered or demilled in any way. Granted, it's a carbine, but still.

Perhaps the media should just get a grip on rifle, pistol, and shotgun. Better to go with basic facts than to unitentionally (?) mislead.
