Just bought a Winchester 1885 Low Wall in 223. What scope do you recommend?

Just bought this off GB. Looking for scope recommendations. Mostly going to be shooting groups or small game 200 yards or less. Was thinking a 1-4 power. I dont want anything tactical. Something that complements the rifle nicely. I do not see anyone really making polished scopes anymore that would match the barrel.

Your thoughts?

Thoughts on Better scope rings? I do not like the ones I used. I do not like the big screws on the mount and the way they budge out the sides on the scope, would like something much slimmer and NON tactical..

EDIT: Rifle arrived and I added an old scope I thought I sold off years ago. See post on 2nd page for more details.

https://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-vx-freedom-2-7x33mm-riflescopes.html something like this?

While probably totally impractical, I think one of the retro vintage brass bodied scopes would look absolutely awesome.

I think the suggestions about the Leupold are good.

I would love one. But really dont want to go through the hassle of building the rifle around them. They require quite the set up. I also do not access to a machine shop anymore that will let me work on fire arms anymore.

i have a browning low wall in .260 and i,m running a 2-7x leupold scope.
Do you have any pics of the full rifle? What kind of groups are you getting? I have been able to find little to nothing on the 223 versions. Really took a risk buying it. I really do not want to have to do a lot of work on it to rain it in. Last 45-70 I bought was pretty good. I only shoot manufactured ammo, dont have time to reload. Took a bit of tuning. Pulled the barrel and set it back a few thou then remade the chamber. Shot really nice sub MOA groups after that. Sadly the machine shop I was using has put a ban on working on firearms and now I’d have to pay someone to do all that for me.

I have a .22-250 Ruger #1B thats either going to get an old gloss fixed 12X or a new 6.5-20X matte.
Think either would look fine on your rifle.

If you are not opposed to a used piece of glass, look for an old Weaver (El Paso Made).

They had nice little fixed 4's and such.

They can be had cheap if you look around.

I grab them whenever I run across them.

Also... Maybe an old Redfield.

If you look on eBay there are quite a few vintage gloss black scopes. Many are used but if you found a Leupold or Burris that would suit your needs you could contact the company and see if they would still service it and bring it up to like new condition.

OP has a darn fine looking rifle, in a varmint cartridge.

That IMHO demands an adj objective scope.

IMHO the newer Leupold stuff is not as smooth looking (turret body) and not available in gloss.

The matte of the VX3HD and others is different than that of the Freedom series.

The Freedoms look greyish, and their turret caps square, the lock ring for the ocular segmented.
The power knob more coarse in texture too

Freedom series are not good looking scopes.

OK on some synth stocked cerakoted bolt rig. But not on a classic falling block of beauty.

I'd tolerate a 6.5-20X Matte Leupold, may buy one for my Ruger #1 .22-250.

BUT there is increasing report that Leupolds don't track well. If you like to dial, might not be the best option.
I'm a set and forget guy. Even on my target Leupolds never messed with dialing for different yardages.
Groundhogs here under 300 yards most times.

Prices for gloss Leupolds on there are insane, asking prices or what folks bid them up to (shill bids or legit).

For a close range walking varmint rifle, the old EFR 3-9X Leupolds were nice.
They fetch silly money these days.

Scopes, rifles, cars, women................you want the looks youre gonna have to pay for it.

Have a 3.5-10X AO gloss on a #1. Id like a little more magnification, since its usually shot off a bipod.
Unfortunately the scope there was bought new in the late 70's, is friction adjust and has a dinged up exterior.
Works fine, but isn't nice enough to put on any new rifle.

Leupold can't continue to rebuild/refurb old scopes. They gotta be short of parts. Some have sent old ones back and gotten
replacements of current model.

FWIW I sent a Burris USA gloss pistol scope back, minty cept for crud inside, spec on lens. I got a new matte Philipine model.
Suspect my scope became parts for somebody, or rebuilt and kept.

I should have asked in writing for my scope back if not fixable. Lesson learned.

I think we are on the same page. Sadly even most modern hunting rifles are going with a tactical or semi tactical look. The nice high dollar custom Mausers and such are all going with semi or full satin finishes. Thats that doing have older scopes.

I’m looking at a 2-7 Leupold on Ebay right now. Nice and glossy. Seems to be in good shape. Might be a good place to start to learn the gun with and then find something with a bit more range.

I did find another website of someone building up one of these. They concluded the build with a new 28 inch barrel 😟. It was the only way to get MOA shots from the rifle. Ended up with well under sub MOA but none the less. Not the find I was hoping for. I hope mine is fine. Well see in a few days.

I just looked up those EFRs, never heard of them. Holy crap, they do fetch a shiny penny.

A walking varmint gun to me means no bipod.
Less scope mag needed since shots from field positions.
Less mag also means less seen wobble ;)

EFRs..............the new Freedom 3-9X model looks crappy. From the flat turret caps, angular/flat turret body and the eyepiece is more tube than bell.
Looks fitting on an AR or similar.

I can tolerate a matte finish if its black enough.
Hunting for pics.....

I dunno, Leupold used to make a fixed 6X w AO. that might have been cool on a walkin rig,

Dunno when they quit making the 4-12X gloss AO.
Or when they stopped gloss in others.
