Just bought a Winchester 1885 Low Wall in 223. What scope do you recommend?

I think we are on the same page. Sadly even most modern hunting rifles are going with a tactical or semi tactical look. The nice high dollar custom Mausers and such are all going with semi or full satin finishes. Thats that doing have older scopes.

I’m looking at a 2-7 Leupold on Ebay right now. Nice and glossy. Seems to be in good shape. Might be a good place to start to learn the gun with and then find something with a bit more range.

I did find another website of someone building up one of these. They concluded the build with a new 28 inch barrel 😟. It was the only way to get MOA shots from the rifle. Ended up with well under sub MOA but none the less. Not the find I was hoping for. I hope mine is fine. Well see in a few days

If it doesnt respond favorably, might want to call Penrod Precision.
Dunno if he works on 1885s, but he's the Ruger #1 guru.
Need to call him and see when i can take my .308 #1A for some upgrades (change trigger and bed forend).

That’s an interesting rifle. Almost interesting enough to get me excited about it. I like old designs chambered in new and relevant chamberings. A low wall 20 practical would have my full attention.

I hate it too, but finding a glossy scope today is the issue.

Stay safe.

See the company in my first post. Any scope you like can be a glossy scope. They refinish them in gloss blue cerakote for $100.

I’ve been scouring eBay for years for good vintage gloss scopes. Definitely landed a few winners, but also gotten shafted lots of times on scopes that wouldn’t hold zero, has notchy power adjustment, poor glass, or ring dents or scratches that couldn’t be seen in the pics. From now on I’m just getting new scopes refinished, it’s not worth the hassle.

Ya, trying the used scope via eBay route is often an experience in frustration.

Ive either had to, or wanted to, scope several rifles over the past few years. All but a couple were gloss finished guns, finding something costing less than a house payment wasnt easy.

I may just reach out to the refinishing people. That may be the best option for a German Weatherby Mk V .300 that needs new glass someday.

Stay safe.

I happened upon a 3-9X gloss w dinged turret caps at a gunshow for fair sum.
Concern is the dings to turret caps. Wonder if internal damage.
Guess I'll find out.
Ordered newer style matte turret caps. Tried some off my VX1 and they didnt look bad.
So I'll have a pretty clean mostly glossy (LOL) 3-9X on my deer rifle.
Assuming it has internal issues, I'll be out 25 bucks to send it to Leupold (if they can fix it).
Hopefully its fine, but if not (and fixable) I'll be around $250 in it.

If you want to compliment the vintage look and your eyesight is still sharp, have you considered a tang sight combo?

FWIW, I went with Leupold LPVOs on my Ruger No. 3s

My only gripe about this rifle is that it does not have a front sight. Otherwise yes, I would do this in a heart beat. Looks great. If I really like the rifle may I’ll have New England Custom Guns work up a sight combo and a quick release scope mount. But My eyes are getting older.

Well everyone. It’s here. Picked it up today. And ran to the basement to dig through my spare scopes. Did not realize I had two gems sitting there. Though I had sold these off years ago. A Redfield 1-4 and a Burris Target turret 4-12 gloss that is mint. I went with the Redfield as it looks the best for its size on the rifle. Dug up som old weaver rings, I cannot stand the look of them, so that will have to change. Here it is.

I like that Burris!
Interesting ring/base mount you are using.

I got a set of used Burris Signature gloss "standard" rings in case a classic comes along.
No longer made, cost me 50 bucks!

I'll be that one guy, I LIKE how this came out, truly I do, that being said, I see a different look/ appeal "potential" here... in one train of thought, the Redfield gives a cute/quaint walk-about theme, my varmints can be smaller and/or further away so that may be tainting the thought #2: better fov/light gathering with the target turret + bonus old school sniper look would not be a bad way to go! If it were me the Redfield would go on a .221 fireball or 22 hornet. Either way though, truly, I don't think you had a wrong choice between the two.

Well, I took a risk and bought a Leupold 2-7 Vari II Off eBay. If it worked it would be an A-. However the zoom does not……zoom. It’s stuck. The ring turns free with normal friction but there is zero diff in the sight picture. Even worse it it stuck on high magnification. But I think it looks good mounted up on the rifle. Trying to decide weather to send it in to Leupold to get it fixed or send it back to the seller. The seller says he has another that works fine and is in even better shape that he will swap it for.

Send it back to the seller Leupold will send you back a new matte finish scope I think it’s cheaper for them to just replace scopes at this point looks Good on the rifle!

I have just the ticket for that. It's a Loopy M8 4X duplex glossy like the one pictured. I got it for a cape gun I have but put a Redfield 2.75 on it instead. I'll probably use it as a second scope for a Savage 2400 (Valmet) 12ga/308 that has a Loopy 2.5-8 on it. The Sako mounts for these are repeatable QDs.

This would look nice on your great looking rifle. They're out there for around $200.00. A gloss 2-7 Leupold would be an excellent choice, too.

Send it to Leupold. I wouldn't trust that eBay seller. If Leupold sends you a new mat 2-7 sell it and use the money for another gloss tube model.

BEWARE buying scopes off eBay in general, BTW.

Congrats on a fine rifle. Small game at 200 yards may be tricky with a 4X. I’d opt for a 3-9X variable. Depending on the barrel twist you may have a fine long range varmint, or short range deer rifle.
