Just called Gander Mountain to see if they had any Stoeger Condors in 20ga. They guy told me to hold on for a minute, he was going to get the manager :scrutiny: The manager gets on the phone and asks me what I'm looking for I said "stoeger condor in 20ga, base model, please", he then asked me who the manufacturer was.......:cuss: are you kidding me? So, I said "stoeger". He then said "oh, you are looking for the stoeger silver reserve condor in 20ga" :banghead: I then said, "I thought I was speaking to the manager of the firearms dept". He said "you got 'em" So, I'm starting to lose it a little and asked if a stoeger humped a mossberg and thats where he got the stoeger silver reserve condor? He said it was new from stoeger :what: Good lord, I just cant take ignorant people.

Just needed to rant......thanks for reading

My manager at Gander Mountain told me once, "I manage people like you. It's your job to know the answers to customers questions."

You may have got a camping, footwear, archery, etc. employee on the phone who was covering the counter for a few minutes. The Gun dept. manager sounds like he isn't familiar with EVERY product on the shelf. Take it easy on the guy.

I thought I kept my cool pretty well. I am an office manager for an environmental firm and didnt get there by not knowing what the hell I was talking about. Thats what kills me, you don't need to know jack about your job anymore.

His job is to manage the Gun department staff. He doesn't need to know much about the product to do that. He manages people, and serial numbers. As long as he follows GM policy, and his employees do too, actual firearm knowledge is just icing on the cake.

Having said that, I agree it's frustrating when you know more about what you want than the person tasked with selling it to you!

I agree.....but, it would just make sense that he might have put in some time in the firearms dept before becoming manager. You could tell just by the tone in his voice that he is clueless.

It would make sense, but they aren't burdened by that. ;)

I worked at GM under three Gun Dept. managers.

One of them came on directly from managing a used car lot.

Gander Mountain

I have found that if you want anything special ordered go to the store and ask for their catalog then find what you want, point to the picture and say
"Me want, you get?" They will understand.

I'm not real familiar with GM, but if he's THE guns manager, isn't he in charge of ordering their stock, or do they just get whatever headquarters orders for him?

The computer manages the stock, and restocks whatever we needed, or whatever Corporate says we need. When Michigan passed CCW, it took GM three years to change their "No CCW guns" policy. Every other gun store in town was smothered in people that wanted carry guns, while GM sat back and did nothing...

Managers rarely know anything about the service/product they manage nor how to do the job of the folks they manage. Disgusting world we live in.

HAHAHAHA rusty thats about right now a days

as for GM and for that matter Dicks or the good old evil wally world i really feel policy needs to change on gun sales/managers entirely

we as gun owners are begged by everyone to have total respect and knowledge of our own personal arms and show extreme caution always without fail and dilligence in informing others that being a gun owner is not evil or deviant

so really is it too much to ask that the person you are buying your firearm from know a little bit about the product?

there are thousands of knowledgable gun owners out there but all it takes is one numbskull who just happens to want a gun to get missinformation from one of these fly by night hope i get a promotion to store manager employees to ruin it entirely for everyone

i know the "KID" at my GM isnt a manager (and god knows i hope he doesnt reproduce) but he is a complete and total idiot
he speaks of self defense as if he were rambo on steriods with a rectal itch that wont go away
he once told a marine that he didnt have to fill out papers to buy a handgun there because the government issued him a weapons card... yea thats what he said
and he told friends of his in the store that he has every right to defend his property with those shotgun shell boobie traps with the trip wire... again yea numbskull

not only should this kid not be allowed to sell anyone firearms i dont even think he should be allowed in the store half the time just for ignorance in general

there are two gentlemen out of the 10 gun sales employees ill even speak to in GM because they take the time to know what they are talking about thats honestly the only safe way to deal with the sales of firearms PERIOD

the more general of a store you get the worse it gets too i wont get too far into walmart but i once had an ammo salesperson tell me there was absolutly no difference at all between .45ACP and .45Colt (long colt) i HAD to walk away from that person and almost made a formal complaint to a manager because im sorry there are novice gun owners that could easily be screwed over by this element of stupidity or even worse possably hurt or killed given the wrong piece of advice/information

Report him to the manager.

I can't afford to work for $8.00 an hour, can you?
That's the problem. People with the knowledge and maturity for the job have better jobs.

If one of the two could have answered your question, it would have been one thing. I can understand one having to ask the other, whichever way it may go. But when the guy goes to the manager for help and the manager doesn't have a clue... well, maybe there's another reason Gander is bringing in a whole bunch of money across the nation.

My experience with GM is that any dept. you go into is the same, the employees know nothing about the merchandise. They are just there to sell it.

The second scenario. I have a friend who works in the gun dep't at our local GM, and he gets very frustrated about it. He knows what people want and what will sell, but headquarters doesn't care. He can take individual special orders, but that's about it.

Exactly.

LOL! GM used to be a good outfit when it was a catalogue operation. Used to order stuff when I lived in the boonies.

IMO, the stores are the same as anywhere else and the gun depts are a joke. Overpriced on everything and seriously overpriced on a lot. No reason at all to shop there.

Some people in retail sales are professional and some look at it as just a job.
Looks like you got the "just a job person."
