Just how carcinogenic is Hoppes #9?

+1 to wearing gloves and not using Hoppe's in a confined space. Xylene can cause permanent nervous system damage, and can be absorbed through the skin.

I like the unpowdered nitrile gloves as they are far more solvent resistant than the typical latex glove. They fit tightly and do not compromise dexterity. I stuff a couple pair in my range bag, too.

Hmm. I'm still not understanding people's overreactive concern about the potential trace benzene level in Hoppe's yet have no problem pumping there own gas in their vehicles which contains MUCH MORE (percentage) as it is a significant component.

pancytopenia

A question about pancytopenia.. This quote is from the second page of the thread:

Anemia

Benzene-induced aplastic anemia is caused by chronic exposure at relatively high levels.
Aplastic anemia is caused by bone marrow failure, resulting in hypoplasia with an inadequate number of all cell lines. Severe aplastic anemia typically has a poor prognosis and can progress to leukemia, whereas pancytopenia may be reversible. Benzene-induced aplastic anemia is generally caused by chronic exposure at relatively high doses. Fatal aplastic anemia following benzene exposure was first reported in workers in the nineteenth century.

What are some other possible medical causes of pancytopenia if it is not brought on by aplastic anemia from exposure to benzene?

Dump some cat litter (the porous clay kind) on the spill area to soak up the residue. Ventilate area. Most of that stuff will evaporate in a little while, and so long as you vent the gases the concentration will continue to diminish. The kerosene will remain soaked into the concrete for some time, but should not be particularly hazardous.
