Its PFD time up here in Alaska and the PFD was pretty big this year. I ended up selling my vz2008 and some ammo for a tidy sum of money and was looking to buy a saiga 12. Well...since i live up in Alaska and work 70+ hours a week during the summers yesterday was the first day that i knew about that stuff getting banned. :banghead: I find myself in a bit of a quandry and have about a grand to spend so heres the question...

If you had a 1000$ budget what would you get for an all around semi auto rifle?

Here are the toys i already have to help you with rounding out the guns.

1968 Browning Belgium BAR semi auto 30-06 (hunting)
Remington 870 with hunting barrel and 18.5 inch with rifle sights
Ruger 10/22 Takedown
Uberti .44 Cattleman
Canik 55 Stingray

I am looking for an upgraded ak style rifle, maybe a 308 battle rifle, or possible big bore AR platform. I am seeing Aks for 500$ and then a huge jump to about 1200$ Are they worth it?

I have all sorts of suggestions. I currently own, or have owned several different battle rifles and I like them all. The trouble is that a full power battle rifle is probably going to cost you a bit more than a grand.

Since you sold the VZ2008 and the ammo, I am going to assume that you don't want a rifle in 7.62X39. But if you were still interested in that caliber, perhaps a AES10B RPK clone?

Most of the AK style rifles in .308 or 7.62X54r seem to be well above your price point as VEPR's are no longer imported and PSL's have dried up.

If you look around there are FAL's out there for decent prices. I recently picked up a L1A1 for $800 and I have regularly seen them for $1000-1100. A PTR (HK91 clone) can be had for around $700 or so, I had a HK91 many years ago and I never warmed up to it, but others just love them.

Since you have a BAR in .30-06, why not consider a Garand? I would suggest a M1A, but they are going to be 1 1/2 times what you have to spend, but if you can swing it they are great rifles.

You could get into the PSA 308 for around $850 to 950

I just bought the lower, and will build it over the next few months

The feedback I have recieved from people that have them is positive

There are American made 12g AK shotguns now. Those are not banned. Only the foreign imports are banned from being imported, that TYPE of weapon is still availible.

Vepr 308's can be had all day on Gunbroker for $850-$1000. I have one with a 22" barrel and love it. The walnut stocks a keeper if you plan on scoping it. Having a scoped AK with a cheek weld is very nice indeed.
