if I'm going to do maintenance on a firearm that's been loaded, and I'm not going to fire the rounds. I unload the rounds and wipe them off with a clean shop towel or paper towel to remove any slight trace of gun oil that may have found its way onto the round, or remove any other remnants or small debree. with oil, less is more - apply liberally, and then aside from the slide, basically keep wiping with a rag or patch until you feel like you've remove it all. A skim coat of oil is all you really want to treat the metal. More just collects dirt. You can not remove the skim coat from the metal unless you use solvent - or let it sit for a couple years unattended.
