I picked up a Kel-Tec pmr 30 last night I was able to get a good deal on it. Having never owned a semi auto 22wmr what do I need to watch for? I see that keltec has specific ammo and loading instructions for loading magazines. Anything else?
Thanks

Load to 25, I can get 30 in there but it isn't pleasant and 2 magazines of 25 takes care of a box of 22WMR.

When loading push with support hand the next cartridge down and with the next cartridge press down and slide the rim along the top of the cartridge in the magazine and under the feed lips, paying special attention to not jump the rim of the cartridge below. Also, understand the reasons for the triangular shaped magazines are for the rounds to start to splay outward at their base (rim) as they get below the top of the magazine, understanding this can help one know better how to load the magazines.

Mine is reliable, I haven't used a large variety of ammunition but they have all been reliable, once one figures out how to best load the magazine.

Personally, I would change out the feed ramp to a stainless steel one from M*Carbo and polish it up. I never shot mine much before changing out the feed ramp, but it worked before, but I wanted to give the gun the best opportunity to run well and I didn't like the idea of a polymer feed ramp to achieve that over polished stainless.

I have one and have run about 600+/- rounds through it without any failure to feed issues.

Load the magazines EXACTLY how instructed. Towards 20+ rounds it requires significant effort to load the cartridges to the point I end up putting a light ding into the one that’s already loaded.

Lightly tap the mag occasionally on something as you load it to seat the rounds to the REAR of the mag.

I’ve been using 40 grain CCI ammo and it works well.

Wear good hearing protection. The sound signature is IMPRESSIVE.

22WMR handguns are a lot of fun though. They shoot so flat and no recoil. I have fun just out in the field taking out dirt clods at distances I just can barely see. The fiber optic irons work really well if one has good eyes.

And yes, as @Frulk stated the sound signature and nighttime fireworks out the end of the barrel are a sight to be seen and heard!

On the muzzle blast note how does it compare to stingers out of a ruger lcp 2? Those flamed pretty good out of that little gun

I’ve noted in a couple of other threads I’m considering the PMR30 as a daily carry. The HUGE plusses for me to make this consideration is its exceptionally light weight, slim profile (all adding to significantly increased carry comfort), my ability to shoot it fast with appropriate accuracy and last but not least mag capacity.

It’s currently at home with a newly installed red dot sight base. I’m in eastern Washington state and didn’t want to run afoul of their recent firearm law changes to mag capacity so carrying a sub-compact PX4 Storm in .40 with 10 round capacity mags. Once I make it back home I’ll decide on a red dot. Biggest consideration for it is light weight as the sight will mount on the slide and I don’t want to impede cycling reliably.

I have a polymer mount and a Romeo Zero (polymer red dot) that I've used on mine and it has cycled with that. But any additional weight and it becomes problematic from what I've read on others accounts.

I usually start tapping the mag after 15 and do so every couple rounds to 30. Fun muzzle blast, low recoil. Great trigger for what it is.

One trick with the PMR30/CMR30 and CP33 magazines is to do the following.
  1. Load magazines per instructions to full capacity then let sit for a day or two
  2. Unload magazine and then reload to full capacity and let sit for another day.
  3. Repeat the above a few times.
This definitely makes a difference and will help. I have done this with all of my CMR30/PMR30 and CP33 magazines.

The only other thing I can think of is to try different weights of bullets. Some PRM30's will run fine with 30-35 grain ammo while others prefer 40 grain or heavier ammo. The local gun shop ordered 3 PMR30's when I bought mine. The other two were for the shop owner and his dad. Only one out of the three would shoot 30 grain ammo without any issues. The other two must use 40 grain or heavier ammo.

These .22 Kel Tec pistol mags are best loaded with a mag loader. The money spent is well worth it.

That's the only advice I have currently, changing out interals is stuff you do after making sure the rest of the pistol functions properly and when you want to improve the feeding of an ammo that shoots accurately, but has cycling issues.

If it a great pistol I own one and felt very comfortable carrying one. Fully loaded it contains a lot of firepower and 31 rounds of 22 magnum is nothing to sneeze at. Mine was very finicky at the beginning and I had to shoot a lot of different brands to find out which were the most reliable and did not create failure to fire or feed or stovepipe. In my gun the 40 grainers and higher weights all function reliably . The lower grain rounds won't cycle my gun that well.

Another concern is the magazine release, you may accidentally actuate it with the palm of your hand because of its location . There are after market parts one can purchase and install to alleviate many issues that were very common, personally I have not had the need to do so with mine.

Smith and Wesson also sells a 22 magnum semi auto that holds 30 rounds which I also own, though a couple hundred dollars more than the Kel-tec definitely worth the money as this hand gun seems to eat whatever you feed it.

As has been posted if you do buy the Kel-tec also buy the mag loader for it if not, you will have issue the bending the cartridges when to try loading the full 30 rounds. Brass on a 22 magnum is very thin.

If you think the PMR is fun, take a look at the CMR carbine. I own both firearms and must admit the carbine goes to the range more often. It is just a blast. Fun meter pegged at 10. Enjoy your new pistol.

Nothing to add to the above comments.

If anyone is interested in a CMR with a scope I had one listed on here but took it down. Would make for a nice companion to a PMR.

Don't have anything to add, just going to reiterate that you have to be very, very careful in how you load them. When loaded correctly, they run just fine. When they're not, they jam like they're paid to.

I have both the Nest Loader and the Maglula loader. Either is much better than hand loading and worth the money. Personally I like the Maglula better but the Nest is easier/faster to use.
I have better luck with 40 gr. loads like CCI maxi mag but Speer Gold Dots work well also.
I have the Tandemkross rail on the slide with a See All sight. Before adding the sight my slide would occasionally fail to completely go into battery and needed a light tap. Adding the weight of the sight fixed that. And I had abiut 500 rounds thru it before adding the sight so it was broken in.
I also only load to 25, since my ammo comes 50 to a box it's a nice round number. Once you're past break in 30 rounds shouldn't be an issue but I also have a CMR-30 so I have a half dozen mags between them.
