Just put a down payment on a Kimber Custom II with walnut grips. Normally I would never put a gun on layaway, but it was their last one, and I liked the gun (and more importantly, the trigger), so I said screw it. Put it on layaway and will pay it off next month with my bonus check. $775 before taxes, which I thought was pretty good for a LGS ($15 cheaper than Impact Guns).

I know a lot of people like to badmouth Kimbers, but for the same price I just couldn't buy a similarly priced gun made over seas.

Now I just need to order some ammo to break it in.... :evil:
 
Good for you, that's a great gun and one of their best models for the money. I think you'll be happy with it like I have been with my Kimbers.
 
I have a Custom II with night sights. I have never had any problems with it. It eats factory 230gr FMJ and reloads with Hornady XTPs all day.

The Kimber triggers are pretty decent. I too think you will be happy with it.
 
I'm weak. I simply couldn't wait until next month, so I went back by the LGS and paid it off. I believe I set a record for their layaway program!

I was mistaken, though. It is a Stainless II, not a Custom II. Same gun I believe, just with a stainless finish. Very classy and understated. I like it!

My Custom II is a great shooter. I bought mine used, but LNIB for a song. If yours is as nice as mine you'll be very happy.
I do like the Stainless finish though, and will probably put some night sights on mine at some point.
 
I had one of the first Custom IIs that came out and like a fool let it go when I bought my Baer. That was a damn nice 1911 for the money. I still have a couple that were made in 1996 and they both shoot very well.
 
Several years ago Kimber tried to incorporate an external extractor into their higher end 1911's. There is nothing wrong with an external extractor if done right, S&W 1911's use them and they work great. For whatever reason those Kimbers never worked right and it soured a lot of folks on Kimber. But their budget Custom II never had an external extractor. I've never heard of any complaints with that version. I have had one for years and it has always run perfectly.

I'm pretty sure you are incorrect on this statement. The external extractor was an across the board switch for Kimber, though it didn't last long.

Researching a picture of a Custom II with an external extractor, I found this THR thread where you made the same statement (almost exactly 1 year ago) and forum member farscott shows his Custom II with an external extractor.

Love my Custom II. Got it several years ago for about $720 plus shipping and transfer. I am not sure if it is my most accurate pistol but i certainly shoot it the best. Great trigger, smooth recoil, I love it. Can consistently shoot a full magazine and only make one ragged hole at 10 yards. The only bad thing is the finish on the safety is starting to wear a bit, that as well as the slide release is MIM, I believe.

Well that didn't take long! The ink probably wasn't even dry on the layaway tag! Great looking gun; I can understand why you went back and picked it up. Let us know how it does at the range.
 
Every time I pick up a new 1911, I run down my checklist for determining the quality of a 1911. Polish and finishing. External machining marks. Frame to slide fit. Does the barrel move when you push down on the chamber while it is in battery? Does the spring tunnel (dust cover, whatever) on the slide rub the frame? These are little things, but they indicate the care with which the gun was manufactured.

I never fail to be impressed with the Kimber line of 1911s. They are very well made guns. I have never owned one but I have also never heard a bad word spoken about them from my friends that do own them.

That's a good looking pistol, primalmu. We are similar in one respect; I don't like waiting either:) Enjoy...enjoy....enjoy....
 
I had a Custom II, my first 1911. Not a hiccup with it. I ended up buying a Pro Carry for something a little smaller/lighter and it's been great too.

I really like the little upgrades Kimber has done this year.
 
We(wife an I) have 3 Kimbers = the Custom II I mentioned above, a Pro TLE(4" barrel) and a Desert Warrior(full size). All run like champs. Finish is second to none. Very happy with these 1911's.

Kimber, in my mind, = good! Very good!
 
I've got a Target Stainless II in 9mm. I've run about 1,500 rounds through it since I bought it last September. I had some minor issues with extractor adjustment on the first day, and since then it's been superb. Nice shooting and consistently accurate. One of my fave shooters.

I know Kimber says, oh you have to shoot 500 rounds before it's reliable but I've never had one that took 500 rounds or more to be reliable.
 
Good to know! I did order a few mags, all different brands, so if I do have any reliability issues I should be able to determine if it is the magazine or the gun.
