Finally shot a doetag with my 1902 stamped 1898 30-40 Krag.

We have been shooting along- mostly I have been guiding new hunters. An old college friend has killed 5 does, an AMU member home on leave shot one with his dad, a dad and son went up and shot one, so I've been carrying the Krag but not shooting. It's a great old rifle to carry.

Saturday evening we went up to put corn in a feeder and jumped three does off the feeder as we came up out of the bottom. They held up long enough for me to look them over about 120 yards away. I picked out the largest with binocs and then stood up next to the jeep with the Krag. The front sight was just tending 9:00 when the second stage of the trigger broke and she went down in place shot a little high and forward. The Krag shoots four inches over the front bead at 100 yards.

We are up to tag number 12 with 30 issued. I hope we kill a few more but we aren't going to get to 20, total. We've got 10 buck tags but the land owner hasn't passed out any of those yet. The deer are just now beginning to hit the feeders as the acorns go bad. It's been an odd year for deer movement. Management season ends the last of February.

I think I have field dressed, skinned and quartered every one of those dang does.

I've shot the 1903A3, P17 Eddystone, K98 Mauser and now Krag. I might go to a Chilean 1895 carbine next in 7X57, but it shoots so far to the left- (a foot at 100 yards), that I hate to carry it. I took the front sight shield off and drifted the front sight over but when it's zeroed the front post is so far to the side that you can't reinstall the shield.

Might carry an AR, a different K31, Garand, or Argentine 1891 Cav Carbine. Probably will get two more trips up, total.
