Lanolin for patch lube?

I have never tried It. Olive oil or crisco works so well I have never experimented with anything else but my info is seriously dated as I haven't shot any of my BP guns for a few years. I bought a Pietta 1851 Navy in the correct caliber early last winter and it hasn't been fired yet.

Here is a lube I have used that has Lanolin in it:

Felix Lube formula from Waksupi's thread:
2 Tablespoons mineral oil
1 Tablespoon castor oil
1 Tablespoon Ivory, or homemade soap (grated)
1 Tablespoon Lanolin
Beeswax - Piece approximately 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 1 "

Heat mineral (baby) oil until it starts to smoke.
Add castor oil and stir continuously for 1/2 hour.
Sliver the soap and stir into the mixture a little at a time, until melted.
Add the beeswax before the lanolin, and then when that is melted, reduce or remove the heat and add the lanolin, thus not running any risk of burning or scorching the lanolin.

1 teaspoon of carnuba wax can be added to give a shiny bore. This can be found on the seal of Makers Mark whiskey, or the red wax on cheese from the supermarket.

Once made, let cool. This can be remelted in a microwave and poured into the lube Sizer.

OP, you are talking about a hand cleaner that contains some amount of lanolin as a skin moisturizer, a treatment against dry skin. Pure lanolin is a sticky wax substance, that is not well suited as a BP lube by itself - it's main purpose in a BP lube is to stick to bullet lube grooves better, not to soften the fouling.

For minie lube, I add some lanolin to the mix. My goto minie lube recipe- 50%Beeswax, 25%lard 25%coconut oil. My mixing bowl will yield about a pound of lube and to that mix I add about a tablespoon of lanolin. Looks like it works fairly well-

Lanolin is hygroscopic (absorbs and retains water). Therefore, you don't want to leave it in contact with the barrel very long. Promotes rust.
Not exactly, lanolin can certainly emulsify 200 times its volume of water, but it can emulsify many other liquids, including ATF and countless oils...
I seem to remember that it's one of the main components of Ed's Red, which isn't particularly known for causing rust. I don't use lanolin to lubricate my patches, but it's part of the grease in my Minié bullets... ;)

Was thinking about easing the cleaning later.

I've found that a few drops of Pine sol on the patch works well to keep fouling down and it helps with clean up afterwards. I am currently using tallow on patches and dip the bowling balls I shoot outta my Ferguson in it as well. It's mixed with bees wax and a tiny amount of paraffin. Haven't tried paper patching so no real experience there.
