...is a fast track for robbery!

This happened this week in Nashville.

Three young guys put trash cans in the street. A man stopped, got out to put them out of the street...and got robbed!

He didn't get shot...one BG did have a handgun. The police caught them within half hour.

I just wanted to put this in your mind for when you are out traveling in your area.

Yeah... if I saw that in the street it would be "u-turn city" for this cowboy.

Can anyone say modern highway men ahead? LOL!

Scams & alerts....

I saw a "unmarked" unit doing a traffic stop in a business district about 3 streets up from my apt complex. :uhoh:
It was a urban street but I would have pulled into a well lit parking lot or 24hr market, contacted the LE non emergency # or 911 dispatch & advise them of the officer or deputy's description. ;)
If the cop or "drug agent" was legit, Id request the area supervisor, watch commander or police patrol supervisor.
Id document the time/location/description of the officer(s)/etc. This would include the LE officer's vehicle & tag #.
My city's PD uses a IA(internal affairs) form that requests the vehicle description & tag # in any statement. ;)

Fake cops & "plain-clothes" officers who later got IA complaints or OPS(professional standards) beefs are not uncommon in my metro area.
About 3 years ago, a "US Dept of Homeland Security special agent" nearly ran a mom off the road as she let her kids off at school. The local sheriff's office told the media the subject was a real undercover agent & was working in that area when the incident took place.

I'd add that street people & homeless in my city now like to stroll up & down the lanes.
Keep an eye on them too. Not just for safety but they can quickly reach in & snag your bag, case, purse, etc. Then bolt off.

People hiding or jumping out at gas pumps is a common tactic too. Be alert when you pump gas. If time permits, circle the lot or stations first. Be aware of your vehicle & use the mirrors/windows.

Crooks & robbers want victims on cell phones or distracted so they can lay them out or catch them off guard.

I work in a very "un-nice" area of Cleveland, Ohio. While this isn't a common occurrence for me, it's happened a few times. Luckily, every time has been avoided by seeing the road some distance ahead and taking a quick detour.

The latest was sitting at a railroad crossing. Long trains combined with late shifts makes me wary sitting there. I had left enough space to do a u-turn as I was approached by several "yoots". Turned into a non-event because i was paying attention.

California rolls

My friend worked for a few months in SoCal/Los Angeles.
He's not from CA and was advised not to stop at red lights or stop signs if he was turning right. :uhoh:
He would slow down but keep moving as to not be stuck in-between cars or bracketed in a ambush.

Defense driving classes like WV's Bill Scott Raceway teach tier one guys & "armed professionals" these skills. ;)

Oh come on, it's not that bad here. I've been to LA several times and visit my Grandmother in San Bernardino multiple times a year. Most "ambushes" are going to be gang related.
Good situational awareness is all you need.
Your buddy got some horrible advice. That's a great way to get a $400 ticket. They take "Cali Stops" very serious here.

I once "knew a guy" who drove a lifted half ton V8 Ford pickup with a brush bumper. He and girlfriend was leaving an event when some folks from a monochromatic young man's social group had set up a 'toll booth' and soliciting money in order to leave said event.

A member of said group stepped out in front of said Ford with both hands up to indicate a 'roadblock'.

Said driver 'lightly' goosed said V8 Ford and opted out of the 'tool booth'.

Called cops to report 'tool booth' and was told it had been operating, but nobody could (or would) identify operators and asked if he could.

Hell yeah, says he-it's the SOB with two broken arms.

'Tool booth' was dismantled post haste.

I have seen the trash can trick. 4500 lb old truck make short work them.
My point is a vehicle sometime is a better choice than defaulting to gun.

My first wife was stopped at red light when a man reach in the partially open window. She hit power window button, trapped his arm, while slowly rolling into the fire station at the corner. Making him run/stumble along side.
Leaning on the horn brought the attention of several burly firemen.
Here is where it gets funny - her father was Captain of the station.
He was not amused. The perp was glad to see the police arrive.:)

biker... right on the money. There are times when your vehicle is a far better option than any armed confrontation...

My advice to my nearest and dearest about road problems (I'm being polite here...) was to never allow herself to be trapped where she couldn't move. The first rule was always to stop a bit short so that you leave yourself room to maneuver if needed. The second rule was that -you do whatever you have to in your car to keep from being stopped and gettting into a situation where you could be attacked in your car, period. This is as far as I'll go on a public forum...

$400.00 traffic ticket vs being shot in the face.....

If I had to choose, Id opt for a traffic citation over being ambushed or car-jacked.

I'm not saying everyone should drive recklessly but if you are in a sketchy area, you can drive as needed. ;)

Like the LAPD cops in the recent End of Watch, IMDb.com , you can put your pistol in your lap or hold it up to the door frame.

WOW, I was in Nashville last week.

I 2nd that I would have down a U turn instead of getting out of my Truck.

In Houston its a known fact that people get jacked in the turning lane at red lights. I'm glad my Truck locks the doors automatically in case I forget. That extra second it gives you could be the second you need to draw.

Dang. I suppose it's not a bad tactic on the thugs part. quite a bit similar to the old highwayman stuff of dragging a tree branch out to stop a coach.

Hmmm... ARB bar on the front of the jeep. provided you can't turn around.

Driving through Camden NJ in the mid 80's, the robbers had setup a stolen "detour" sign, which lead to a side street with an obvious ambush setup down the end of it.

Seeing a car roll in to seal the trap in the rearview, stunt driving ensued. Fortunately, they didn't give chase once I got out of the box.

Upon reporting the matter to the first policeman I could find, his reaction was "What? Really? They're doing that *again*? Don't worry, kid, we got this", followed by radio calls, sirens and excitement.

Currently equipped with two blinding 450 watt 25v aircraft landing lights and a deafening 2x100 watt police air-horn (siren tones disabled). Of course it already had the brush guard and the 6000# momentum. Oh yeah, and the rifle rack behind the seat, standard.

No, good situational awareness vs. $400. If the situation warrants it then I understand. Doing it every time simply because he's in a run down neighborhood is foolish, as is posting this as legitimate advice on a public forum.

A similar situation happened to my great grandmother. People blocked the road (dirt road) when they saw her coming, she panicked stomped the gas and all but one got of the way, he got ran over, if I remember right they laid down in the road. I'm not if the one guy was killed or not, I'd have to ask my dad. This was decades ago but it's the kind of thing people still do, at least they has sense to use trash cans.

I will say what I said in the US Army MP school; You can walk out of jail but you can't walk out of a graveyard. ;)

Also, @Mainsail that's a cool ride, ;) , when I was in the military we called those CUCVs or the Lonewolf McQuade trucks. :D

I looked into buying a surplus CUCV about a year ago. Custom or decent shape SUVs like Mainsails aren't cheap. :uhoh:

I also saw a sweet surplus public works vehicle(Boyton Beach Florida I think). It was a 2005 Ford F150, white with a yellow light bar, alley lights & a huge black brush-guard). They website listed the Ford F150 at about 5500.00 USD which was well worth it for the quality & features.
I was considering buying the truck to use on armed security posts.

Another reason why I prefer trucks, and 4WD ones at that I own two, and a 2WD, and just sold a third 4WD.)

A young lady and I were leaving an establishment one fine afternoon, when several locals milled about the rear of my truck and told me that it wasn't time for me to be taking that truck out just yet. It was pulled forward into a parking spot with a cement stopper in it.

I wished them a good day, and drove forward, over the stopper, the grass island beyond it, and calmly out of the parking lot. They were apparently speechless.

FIELD TESTER - "Oh come on, it's not that bad here. I've been to LA several times and visit my Grandmother in San Bernardino multiple times a year. Most "ambushes" are going to be gang related.

I agree. I lived in Los Angeles for 36 years. I haven't the faintest idea how many thousands of right turns I've made at red lights and stop signs AFTER stopping to make sure no traffic was coming. I never had anyone try and "car jack" me, or rob me.

It would not be just one $400.00 ticket: if one made it a habit of not stopping to make a right hand turn against a red light or red stop sign, it might be six or eight a month. That is a lot of money to assuage one's fear of being car jacked.

Situational awareness is the key... and I and my wife both practiced that. After all, it was Los Angeles. :D

Just my opinion based on my experience. Others would have to do whatever made them comfortable. :)

Nice rig, Mainsail. Is that old milsurp?
Yes, it used to be a range truck on Ft Lewis right before they swapped in a new motor and auctioned it off. The guy that bought it from the auction let it sit in his yard for a year or so and then sold it to me. I call it the Chick Repellent Vehicle because whenever you find someone selling one, it's usually because their wife or girlfriend won't ride in it. My wife loves it and we drive it on the miles and miles of Forest Service roads we have out here. We can shoot, picnic, camp (with a real campfire), or just explore without permission, permits, or any other red-tape. We take it down some long abandoned roads that are too brushy for any other vehicle; that CARC paint can take a real beating and still look good.

Beware the man that isn't concerned about his paint; block his vehicle at your peril. ;)

Another point(s) to consider.....

Big pick ups & large SUVs get awful MPGs mostly, but I've learned a side benefit with elevated vehicles is you get a wider angle of view & can sometimes see over or around other vehicles(street levels). ;)
This can be a threat awareness issue or a safety plan. I like looking down at a smaller car & seeing all the occupants. Or looking over & seeing traffic a few streets away before they turn or are at traffic signals.

I'm not talking about a Monster Truck like Bigfoot or Gravedigger but to get that advantage is worth the extra gas $$$. :D

Rusty
PS; sometimes you can see older milspec vehicles or public service vehicles like Mainsail's sweet SUV on www.govdeals.com or one of the LE/USMS auctions.
My county sheriff's office holds a big open auction once a year. It's mostly Ford Crown Vic's & Impalas but some F150s or SUVs(the GM police PPV).
