I've seen STI, Para and Springfield, but is there a less expensive way to get into a 9mm 1911 pattern pistol? I'm thinking of an almost purely range/plinking gun with more oomph than a .22 conversion and less expensive ammo than .45 ACP.

Kimber also makes a three 9mm pistols - the cheapest, I think, is the Pro-Carry. I've been quoted around $675 for it, but that ain't cheap.

ditto armored man. the star bm is a great pistola. shoot it once, and you'll be a fan.

There's the Springfields for around $650-$675.

Here's Mine. Fixed Sight Model

To me, the "1911 pattern" is defined by its unique sliding trigger which the HiPower lacks amoung other differences I'd agree are minor.

The Star (and Llama) are close but both are from makers gone belly up. Best cheap way to go is buy a pair of Star BMs so you have a spare, but extra mags are going to be a problem and generally overpriced if you find them.

If you want a new gun the ~$450 Armscor 1911-A2 widebody 9mm (Para P18 clone) is the way to go as extra Para 17-round Mec-Gar mags are reasonably priced, readily available, and are what comes with the gun. Use the search, I've posted a thread about mine, still very happy with it approaching 6000 rounds later. You'll have to look to find the Armscor 1911-A2 9mm as they are not very common. I wish they'd come out with a single stack 9mm priced like the RIA .38Super but with better sights. Unfortunately 9mm single stack mags cost almost as much as the 17-rnd Mec-Gars.

I'd been shooting my Star BM before finding this gem, but the lack of mags was a problem and the four BM mags I have aren't all 100% reliable despite my best efforts (one BM mag was new in blister pak and gun was 100% with it).

The Springfield and Kimber seem great guns but IMHO are too expensive for a gun who's main purpose is to shoot cheap ammo in a 1911. But if you believe in 9mm over .45ACP then these might be the way to go.

Edit: Norinco 9mm would be great, but not in the USofA :(
