I generally like Lee dies and have no problems with them, but I did finally find the one that they just got wrong: the 7.5 MAS sizing die. I’m pretty sure it’s just a 300 Savage or 308 die with slight modifications by the amount it oversizes brass.
I only have one rifle in the cartridge (MAS 36), so neck sizing is a good idea anyway. My thought was that I could use a collet neck sizing die from another cartridge. The Hornady manual case drawings show the same neck outer size for 308, 30-06, and 300 Savage. I assume if I set the height right it should work. I’m using 0.308 bullets anyway so neck tension should be fine. The base fit in my 30-06 neck sizer so it should be possible. I did realize as I was writing this that the length of the 30-06 die may be a problem with a 9 mm length difference, but a 308 should be easy to get too.
Are There any problems I’m missing here? In the longer run I’ll probably end up getting the RCBS sizing die, but it may take a while before my stash of new PPU brass needs that much sizing for a low-volume shooter of a rifle.
