When firing my 870 express mag, my trigger finger has a lot of contact with the safety button when it is disengaged. Though it hasn't happened yet, I'm afraid that one day I might inadvertently put the safety on during the course of fire. This makes me hesitant to load up the 870 for HD purposes.

Any other left handed 870 users have this concern?

I shoot left-handed with rifles and right handed with shotguns and pistols because i'm left-eye dominant. some times i'll pick up my 870 and fire a few rounds of trap left handed before i realize what i'm doing and switch back to right handed just because i don't like the shells flying acrossed my face.

Accedental activation of the saftey has never been a concern for me, if your finger is on the trigger the way it should be you should have no worries. Just put the tip of your finger on the trigger, not the first knuckle or anything like that.

Lefty shooting a RH 870 here too.
Never had an issue. It might depend on the size of your hands too. I have thin, long fingers.

Yet another southpaw here stating having had no unintentional safety activations.

Recently put a Speedfeed III on my 870 and noticed my finger is even further away from the safety button.

Also does anyone know if the safety button can be reversed on an 870?

Lifelong 870 shooter. I shoot left due to cross dominance issues.
Never had any problems with the safety on my 870's whether shooting birds, clays or defensive style courses of fire.

Once took the 870 to gun skul, ran 250 rnds of buck and 50 slugs. Shot on the move, transitional drills, static, never had a problem.

Install a LH safety. I did and have no problems. Vang sells them as well as others.

Maybe I will look into that left handed safety.

Only problem with that (and also why I haven't converted my AR's, etc) is that I want my natural reaction/trained response to be the same with whichever I pick up. If I'm used to a left handed safety on my rifle, and pick up one that isn't mine, then it isn't the same... etc.

Ah well... like I said, it has never happened yet... maybe I should just stop worrying about it.

I'm a lefty and shoot a Remington 870P Max as well as a Remington 1100. I've never had any accidental safety activaton problems with either shotgun. It is a non issue as far as I'm concerned. I store the 870 with 6 rounds in the tube with hammer down on an empty chamber. I never even use the safety, just pump it and it's ready to go.

When you are cross dominant and all guns have the safety in a manner that is not designed with you n mind, you learn to improvise and overcome.

I meant for my question to be more specific. As in, what exactly is your technique? Do you reach your index finger around the trigger gaurd? do you just not use the saftey, etc.

I didn't realize there was such a thing as a left handed saftey I'll have to check that out.

Can the safety on an Ithaca M37 be reveresed?

I'm rightie, so while I suggest an M37 for lefties due to the bottom ejection, I never considered how someone "wired wrong" would operate the safety. If the safety is reversible, it would be great for lefties or righties. I like them, but I prefer the 870, just because I've shot the 870 more, I'm right handed and everything is where it is supposed to be in my mind.

There is another answer. I have a true left handed Remington 870. It ejects left and it already has the left handed safety. For a lefty like me, it is just the ticket. Best of all, when one of those righty's picks it up and tries to use it they almost never get the safety off without some trouble.

The usual 870 upgrades, stocks, forearms, magazine extensions, etc. fit just fine. The down side is there isn't much of a selection in barrels.

I had my safety reversed in my Rem 870 and a new left hand safety installed on my Ithaca M37. Ejection has never bothered me.

I'm left-handed, and my first shotgun was an 870 Express in 20 gauge.

To move the safety, I use my thumb. It took some practice, but it wasn't too hard to get used to.

I sometimes shoot my RH 870s from the port side. To take off the safety, I roll my hand around the grip until I can hit it with my thumb. Not difficult.

I had the same problem. You are not alone and yes, this IS a potentially dangerous situation. I took my 870P to my local Remington autorhized repair station - just happens to be my regular, nearby gunsmith and he reversed the safety. Now before you say, "yippee," keep in mind this is major work on an 870, it requires drilling and very precise measurement. It also is not an inexpensive modification. But what price do you put on safety? Remington authorized/licensed gunsmiths are provided detailed instructions on how to do this mod. Personally, I would have it done if you are using your 870 as a primary defense weapon. You might want to call the factory to check on the cost and the turnaround time.

This is a job I would only have done by the factory or as in my case, a Remington authorized repair shop. I am not familiar with the Vang.

The only negative about the RH 870 if you are LH.
