So batons are not legal CCW or car implements in NH (and most other states). I have a Cane Master cane I tote around, but it's a bit long when not walking.

I'm considering a 5 cell Maglite. Seems there used to be knarly metal flashlights, but no doubt legal issues have prevented LEOs from employing such implements.

What else might I add to my list? Any better flashlights out there that pack a whollup? I might keep a Tonfa (original PR24 concept) in a workout bag on the front seat, claiming I was just practicing at the gym, but that's a stretch...

The 5-cell Maglites are very heavy to tote around all day. The 3-cell flashlights using "C" batteries make an effective little weapon. Might consider a nice aluminum baseball bat for the car.

I'm thinking of the cop-stop test: "Why do you have that XXXX there in the front seat where you can reach it?" Bats qualify as bludgeons/clubs under state weapons prohibitions. An entrenching tool maybe, but odd to carry in the front rather than the truck. I should get one for sure (Glock, Cold Steel, etc.) for the back seat, even if just to dig out.

FYI & only slightly OT. - I was looking at a forestry supply catalog a while back and it advertised what they were calling a "Dog Bite Stick". It was being sold to ward off attacking dogs. It was certainly an expandable baton of some type. I don't recall any admonishment to check local laws before purchase. This of course would be unlikely to help you any with an LEO or in court.

I got hit in the head by a 4 D cell mag lite. I can assure you that a tap with on of these on the head will rinder a man almost useless. I had a huge knot and slight concusion. My wife learned not to play with my mag lite anymore. I like my maglite more for a weapon than i do a lite. Thats what me streamlights are for.

I must have a harder head than you. I was hit in the head twice (maybe 3 times) with a 4 cell MagLite, and was still getting back on my feet, when the assailants ran off. Got a helluva scar up there, though...

Man, I'd hate to get on your wife's bad side.

"...metal flashlights..." Get really friggin' cold in winter. ABS plastic is your friend. Knew a guy who had one that was 3', yes, feet, long. 10 cells I think it was. Guy worked for GM and had more money than brains.
Chances are that if you used a flashlight as a weapon, you'd be charged just the same as if it were a baton. Your intent is just as important as actually bopping a bad guy.

The legal implications of clubbing someone are the same, but a flashlight doesn't concern sheeple or cops the way a an expanable baton does.

cbj,

get a mini-maglite, or even better, a Surefire E2 or Emissive Energy iNova. Learn how to use the backfist.
