The only group that should be ashamed of their performance during Vietnam is the segment of the US public that decided to support our enemies instead of our troops.

Amen my brother...and from the looks of it, there's a whole new
group comin' from the post-Vietnam "Baby Boomers" who are
still playin' Hanoi Jane on that issue. People of that ilk are likely
responsible for about 20,000 names on the wall that never
would have been there if not for them...I think...and really should be
charged with treason and sentenced accordingly. (Read up on the
penalties for treason, and know that I agree 100%)

Anyway...since I've got the mod hat on these days, I gotta say it...
Back on topic gentlemen...before I become abusive and get fired.

Thanks to all who rose to the defense of our servicemen and women,
past and present. We appreciate it to the bone.

For the "others"...go enlist and report back in three years. Maybe
you'll learn something that your mommies and daddies failed to
teach you. Honor and respect comes to mind. I promise that it will
be a more meaningful experience than anything you've done thus far.

Billy,

Can you point out specifically what the Marine Corps did in Vietnam that leads you to believe that they didn't do so well as a fighting force?

Books and reality tv are not the same as receiving and returning enemy fire "boy."

Gentlemen, I believe the 'boy' just needs a little education. Billyboy, et al. The Marines were established in 1775, to serve aboard Navy ships as marksmen, as part of a strategy to 'take out ' pirates who boarded navy ships. They succeeded SO well, they expanded their duties to 'ride Navy ships and go and 'descend' upon whole ports and either secure it, encompass it, or delete it, depending on what was necessary. The President of the US was so impressed with their success, he wanted the Marines for his very own, so he declared the Marines as " The Presidents Own". Since then, the President could send in the Marines, anywhere to do anything, without the permission of Congress or declaring official war. If you want a quick history of the battles of the Marines, just listen to the words of the Marine Corps Hymn. "From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Triploli, we will fight our Countries battles from the air and land and sea." See the Marines invented and perfected amphibious landings, otherwise unknown to the world and which all SF have copied since, where like a frog, we come out of the water onto land and kick ass everywhere we go. Marines are a no-nonsense entity, which is evident in our uniforms,as compared to the walking Cristmas trees known as dogfaces, I mean Army. Everything on a Marine's uniform is earned(much like the Boy Scouts, I was one of those too). Every tactic and methos of killing is based on past history and a strong knowledge of what works and what don't. For instance , did you know that at Valley Forge, Washington wrote that his survived that brutal winter because local farmers brought them eggs and butter, all they could afford, but his men survived on that and to this day, the Marines serves real butter and real eggs. Stuff like that makes the Marines REAL. The Marines got the first Harriers (my first squadron, '77, Yuma ,AZ). You better believe, if you know ANYTHING about history, the Marines are the modern day Spartans. Another thing you might wanna consider, there's apparently some Marines here , so walk softly.

...and a lotta calves liver...a lotta calves liver. Lord...:D

Gene...I think you're wastin' your time. The boy is a troll who really
doesn't care, and has no wish to hear the facts due to his mind bein'
made up. Or...he might be a girl. He called me "sweety" after all...
:D

Remember when the young'uns didn't want to hear what somebody was sayin'? They;d put their fingers in their ears and go: LA LA LA LA I can't hear you! LA LA LA...

Semper Fi...and thanks Gene.

But the real question is......

How many people know that in small letters on the Marine Corps logo is the words: "Department of the Navy"?

And how many Marines would admit it?

Married to a squid........

Hey... don't be laughing so fast at those kids...... we now know one of those kids can grow up to be President!

Or the blood stripe?

Or the number of beltloops on trousers?

We can play jarhead trivia all day long. You can even get your wife to help, and you'll still lose. So was there a point to your statement at all?

...or maybe it was mine. I'll be your Huckleberry, you can best bet the blood stripe was for the same reason the "Stars and Stripes " have red stripes in them. Yeah , we can play 'Jarhead ' trivia , like why're we called 'Leathernecks' or 'Devildogs' and why do we say "oohrah"? The reason we're part of the navy was because our original mission was to protect the navy, which we did, and then did more. Logistics dictated we stay with the navy, but that's our ONLY connection. Same reason Rangers or Green Berets are 'part of the Army', but believe me, it's only on paper. So what's your point? We got a brother who's head's on the chopping block, what're you talking about?

Um yep, true the stripe was incorporated to the uniform as a result of the battle, but the fact that it was a red stripe(as opposed to , say, a blue one) was EXACTLY for the same reason as to why our U.S. flag has red (as opposed to, say, green) stripes and also explains why they even call it a 'blood' stripe, so UM YEP.

Not worth arguing about

Text of the first Flag Act passed by the Continental Congress June 14, 1777: "Resolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Excerpt from "Our Flag" published in 1989 by the House of Representatives: "In heraldic devices, such as seals, each element has a specific meaning. Even colors have specific meanings. The colors red, white and blue did not have meanings for the Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal (adopted in 1782) did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated: 'The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence; Red, hardiness and valor; and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.' "

I don't know if you're a brother Marine or not, but I hope you didn't think I was calling you out either way. No harm, no foul.

By the way the "marine" bravado didnt go far in Viet nam now did it?

Billyboy-you ever hear of a place called Con Thien? How about Hue? Khe Sanh ring a bell??

Why don't you try raising your right hand and finding out for yourself instead of recklessly running your trap around those who know?
Better yet, why not go to the nearest Marine NCO club and run your thoughts past them?

Heck, you can even try that one with the Army. I highly recommend two places to try that-Ft Campbell, Ky and Ft Bragg NC.

Fix, it just really bothers me that you want to get on here and act like this. Have you heard of 'law of the land'? Everyone that has ever 'served the flag' agrees what the stripes on the Flag represent . Btw, your quote is talking about the Great Seal, so it's further pointless.

Now, can we get back on topic. Any news?

Cowardly thugs just announced they beheaded the hostage Marine. Dear God have mercy on thier souls, as the Corps will not....not until the last shrieking mullah is fed into the meatgrinder....

First I want to thank everybody who's served in defence of America.
I was a peacetime squid fixing fast attacks up in New London. I've got my honorable but was never out of the states.
I assure you I would've fought to the best of my ability had I been called on.
I have a very hard time understanding billy and his ilk running down those who've given all so that he can be comfortable.
Ingrate. You should move to france for a few years and see what that's like. And then stay there.

I can't say Semper Fi but I'm real glad some can.
