Spent this am playing with this scope.

Mine has the Multigun FireDot BDC Reticle that's calibrated to 600 and is mounted on my Fraken AR (Larue Predat 16" 1:8" Wylde barrel, with Geiselle SSA-E Traigger):

I worked up a 5.56 "NATOish" load a couple months ago; Nosler 60grn BT at 2974 Fps from the 16" (Coyote Load) and sent the data (MV, Sight-in, Elevation, Pressure etc.) off to Leupold for a custom CDS dial. The dial arrived last week and is calibrated from 200-650Y and I finally got a chance to try it today. Shot from 200-400 on steel and the dial works great, using both the dial and BDC it's surprisingly easy to stay on an 8" plate at 400 with a decent rest. While the BDC is about .5MOA low for this load, the dialed-in hold is about perfect.

As you can see from this pic, the CDS dial is still low profile and just a hair wider than the original turret cap:

While "plinking" I also shot some of my standard 55FMJ which came out to 1.5MOA low and .75 MOA left of the .60grn load. When I click in the holdover, the BDC was spot on for the 55s out to 400, which makes sense as that's what they're calibrated for.

Overall I'm pretty impressed both with the BDC and the CDS dial. For those on the fence about either a variable power or the Leupold system I think it does add some flexibility to the AR.

I'm not a fan of custom turrets or bdc reticles but I do like the ZLS knobs that Leupold is offering.

I'm curious - I have the same scope and just ordered a CDS dial. The original adjustment dial is the type that lifts and allows you to reset to zero. Did yours have those same adjustment dials? If so, how are they removed to put on the CDS dial when it gets here? (there are no visible screws to remove)

Thanks for the help!

Mine had the same dial, the old dial just pops off, no screws. The new dial has screws and a small ring IF you want to install the zero-stop. This video explains it well:

Thanks Chuck. I will check it out. My scope is also metric - clicks are 1cm/100m. I think that’s why I got a great deal on it. It was a special order and someone didn’t want it or something.

How do you like it so far?

Is the reticle also somehow in mils????? Honestly don't think it will matter if they're different (MOA holdovers and .mil clicks) because the dial is going to compensate somewhat.

I had mine out this AM during the balmy 32 degrees checking out a load. Serves me right for waiting till the last minute.

I don't have mine mounted on the rifle yet - the mount should be inbound to me sometime this week. My reticle is the duplex/with FireDot in a circle. It has hash marks on the lower half of the reticle, but no numbers like the one made for 5.56mm. I have no idea if the hash marks are anything but simple graduations that you can use as a BDC however you want. (I'm putting this on a .308 so didn't want a 5.56-specific scope) I think it's going to be perfect for this rifle, as it's a relatively lightweight AR-10 and not meant for any really long distance.

RainDoger,

Contact the Leupold CS guys via email, tell them what reticle you have and they can give you the MOA values for the "hash marks" might be able to give you the Mils, or you can convert. Very simple then to run a ballistic program and you'll know what holdover value they have for your rifle/load. It's nice to know that the 400y mark is really 375y for your rifle/load.

Excellent idea. I will drop them a note.

I can probably get a good idea by actually using the hash marks and looking at my groups, but it would take longer... but I’d get to spend more time at the range!
