Everyone I know in NYPD carries either a Glock, Sig, or S&W in 9mm.

They are given the option or any of them although the third generation S&W is no longer produced and dropped from the list. I haven't heard of a replacement as of yet.

VA State police - Sig P229 in .357SIG
Fairfax County, VA Police - Sig P229 in .40 (I've seen 9mm as well)
Henrico County, VA - Glock 22
Prince William County - Glock 21

Unless something has changed in the last 10 months since he retired, a member of my church who was with HPD said old-timers who had been carrying various previously approved guns can continue carrying them if they can continue to qualify with them. He, for example, has a Smith 4006 and his partner had carried a Smith model 19 revolver for years before switching to a Glock 22 about 4 years ago. After he retired he went to work for a local County Constable and he's continuing to carry the 4006 even though he owns a brand new G22.

For what it's worth...

Q

Thanks, I got all my info from this blog http://www.hpdblog.com/2010/10/what-kind-of-pistols.html

It's geared toward new cadets, so I don't know if officers are allowed to grandfather in their old weapons or not. I don't have any friends in the HPD, only responded since I live there now.

I'm happy to hear that more police departments are allowing officers to choose from a wide range of guns. As long as it's economically and logistically feasible, it's great to allow the officers to use the guns that they can shoot the best.

Glendale, AZ Glock 22 and 27. You have the option to purchase and go with the 17, 26. Pretty much all of Phoenix metro is glock in one form or another.

Alaska State Troopers: Glock 22 (40 cal) pistol for uniform use. Colt AR-15 as patrol rifle, Rem 870 as shotgun and H&K MP-5 as a sub-gun. M-700s are used as tactical rifles.

Anchorage Alaska Police dept: Glock 21s (45) with option of G-22s for smaller folks. Plus options for personal purchase.
HK53s and MP-5s for special units.

Cordova Alaska,: They were carrying HK Squeeze-Cockers in 40 cal a few years ago. I don't know now.

Local PD: Personal Purchase option.

Alaska Probation and Parole: Mini Glocks are issued in 40 cal. Personal purchase and carry option varies with the political winds.

Are problems with XD that widespread? I have never been overly interested in one and as such haven't done too much research.

i had an XD45,and the only things it did consistently were jamming and providing poor accuracy. that's no common, but i know a lot of folks have mentioned parts breaking at not so high round counts.

also, larry vickers referred to XD's as range toys (for what it's worth). no serious combat operators use XD's. the croation military and thunder ranch's clint smith don't count lol

I guess Larry Vickers hasn't been shot with one yet. It may not last as long as an 80,000 round GLock, or even a 20,000 round 1911, but I wouldn't want to bet my life that it wouldn't kill me or someone else, in a very efficent manner. I just fired friend's .45 XDM last week, and it worked just fine. I hit every metal plate I fired at at 20 yards.

Maybe they have steel core rounds or something designed to penetrate body armor. I've heard they were even considering going to the FN five seven due to concerns over armor (even if not necessarily body armor, something such as attackers shielding themselves with a backpack full of books).

Why would an air marshal want to use a round known for penetration....on an airplane...?
Apparently, they don't...but they're forced to (or at least as of four years ago): Air Marshals Warn Their Bullets Are Too Powerful

And interesting discussion here about their ammo.

ETA: and oh yeah, one more agency and weapon:

Tufts University PD: S&W M&P-40 (I'm actually assuming it's an M&P-40, since they transitioned to a 3rd-gen S&W .40 just as I was graduating, and I saw M&P's on their hip last year when I visited the campus)

MD State Police -- Beretta Px4 Storm in .40. Maybe cause theres a beretta plant here. I believe they had Beretta 96s before and recently switched to the storm.

Pennsylvania Game Commission: Glock 31/Glock 33 back-up 125gr Speer Gold Dot.
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission: Beretta 96D
Pennsylvania State Parks: Smith and Wesson M&P .40
Pennsylvania State Police: Glock 37

As you can see, state ammo contract is probably a little more complicated than it needs to be...

Quiet...
Thanks for posting that, shows what many seem to know 40 S&W is very much the caliber in majority...I can go for that or the 9 mm because of extra rounds available to put down range, on me;)

I have a 9mm as my main carry (Glock in a 17) and a Glock 21 in 45 around the house... I put a 17 slide on top of my 22 Glock in a 5 pound pull, rather than my 17L in a lighter trigger weight...:)

I switch around at times 357 Sig or 40 S&W in the 22 model...Then I can switch my model 21 into a 400 Corbon or 10 mm...All good stuff imho...
Regards
