Greetings from sunny Bavaria,

i am looking for one modern powder for my Chiappa 1876 (45-60) lever rifle and my miroku winchester 1886 (45-70)lever carbine, if usefull.

It should have of course good accuracy and good for up to 150 yards hunting. There is no need for magnum power..

My boolits are lead cast 330 grain and 405 grain with crimp grooves.

And my 1876 gets of course also the holy black sometimes..

Any hints out of your own experience are most welcome.

I have used many powders for the 45-70 but my current favorite powder is AA5744. I find it to be extremely accurate with several bullets including a 405gr Cast Bullet. That powder should work equally well with the 45-60.

Welcome to the forum.

70 gr of 2f black with a .030 fiber wad under the bullet, for the 45-70. The 45-60 gets enough 2f black to compress the powder about 1/10th inch with a .030 fiber wad under the fully seated bullet.

Hello,

Thank you for your kind hints.

What would be an equvalent European powder to the AA5744??

I've tried a lot of different powders in .45-70. I settled on IMR 3031.
I don't know if it's a European powder or not.
+1 on BP and AA5744. The latter was popular with some 200 yd competition (cast bullets and pre 1900 ordinance) shooters I once associated with.

It all depends on what kinds of powder you can get in your local area. If you can find Alliant Powders ...Reloader 7 works very nicely in the 45-70 and similar sized rounds

I'm also a fan of 3031 for my 45-70 for full power loads. For plinking loads trail boss is hard to beat. 4064 did not impress me, falling a few hundred fps behind the 3031 and still using way more powder than the trail boss.

I looked on a burn rate chart and there doesn't seem to be a European equivalent. AA5744 is made in Canada and not brought over from Belgium like some of the other Accurate Powders and all but one of the Ramshot powders. (Both owned by Western Powders)

You might have some luck contacting VihtaVuori or Nobel and see if they can recommend a powder they sell. I'm sure they will help you.

I really like IMR4895 for 45-70. Seems like it provides the right amount of flexibility to load up or down a bit with little risk of an overcharge. At least for me - YMMV.

I'm going to have to also recommend IMR-3031 and H-4895. Those are my two go to powders. Others will squeeze a little more velocity. But those to are almost boringly consistent. And that's a very good thing.
