OK, The wonderful, brilliantly minded city of Columbia is offering a gun buy back this weekend. They are offering $50 to $100 for handguns at the local baseball stadium.
My question: I have an old POS Rhom .22 revolver that is on the "Saturday Night Special" list the city of Columbia had posted a few years back. I won't ever shoot this gun, becaue it is JUNK! So, anyone thinking like me? I'm thinking $50 to $100 cash for this crap!
Or should I pull the old gunshow trick and stand outside the gate trying to buy guns from everyone entering the area? :D

how about both? Turn in that POS for whatever cash you can get, then use that cash to buy guns off of the people coming to drop them off, assuming that there are any decent guns being brought to these. The way I see it, everybody wins here. :)

Waitaminnit...they're doing this in a baseball stadium? In my neck of the woods, sports arenas are considered "public gatherings," and it's illegal to bring a gun in there! So, even if I wanted to do my part to "clean up the streets," I couldn't without getting in trouble.

Oh, the irony.

LOL! Funny they would hold it there, You NEED a gun on that side of town

Although the crud has been creeping up Broad River Road ever since.

I've always thought it'd be funny to buy a dozen or so Hi-Points for $80 or so and go to a buy-back where they'll buy any handgun for $100. :D

Scott, I'll see you out there brotha! I'm gonna try to get off work early so I can make it. Gonna bring $500 and wait in the parking lot. I hope I can find myself a few Christmas presents!

I bet the majority of the people showing up are going to be thinking just like you guys. Not to many people that know what they have are going to be there selling their quality guns for $100. Still, if it were closer, I would go. :D Just consider it a state sponsored gun show.

Hey, I'm going to turn in a nasty old gun! It's a nasty .22 rifle because:
a) no stock
b) won't function.

I bought a beat up old single shot bolt action (and barrel, no stock . . .) at a yard sale for $5; thought I could make it a "project." Now, I doubt I'll ever find the parts or the time, sooooo . . .

$50 ?? Yeah, baby! I can buy some replacement spring kits for some old milsurp handguns! :D :D

"When you take guns off the streets you save lives,†City Councilman E.W. Cromartie said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. “Make our streets, homes and neighborhoods safe.†The State, Wed. Dec. 15, 2004, Staff

Oh please! :barf:

Maybe E.W. plans to turn in a few himself and raise a few bucks towards the back-taxes he's perpetually in arrears for.

They had one of these "buy-backs" a couple of weeks ago at a Wal-Mart here in North Las Vegas. I drove by, thinking I'd have a buy back of my own, and there were about 30 police cars, Swat-team guys with armor and thousands of people. They said that no private buying was allowed and they are planning another for March because there were more guns than they had money. I heard that they gave away $106,000.00 in gift certificates. All this at $100 per rifle and $50 per handgun. I was really shocked at that amount. There were probably some nice pieces among the junk. :what:

"How can they just declare private transactions illegal?"

It's on private property, all it takes is for WalMart to say "no".

actually.....

mfree, they CAN'T, they just don't want YOU to KNOW IT!!!! (i posted this before in another area) everybody, particularly the nra, screams about the 2A, but before the BOR was ratified, the country was in need of some good ol' CASH, and they needed CUSTOMERS, too!!! how important was this???? in Article1, Section10 it says,(down near the bottom) ".....and no state shall pass....any bill.... or law impairing the obligation to CONTRACTS......" contracts, written or verbal, are MORAL agreements(shudder), so if there exists fraud, criminal conduct or intent, the contract never was(that's a good answer when some lawyer says;"well....well....what about drug deals????" OBviously an A-hole, that most of them are). and citizens are always permitted to sell their PRIVATE PROPERTY, they have that right!!! the "contract" section has stood up in SCOTUS something like 145 times, & in state & federal courts over 1600 times!!! so if someone lies to you & says he can buy your gun, well, they should have registered HIM, and, they need to do their duty & go out & run HIM to ground & incarcerate of execute HIM, not the responsible "taxpayer"(we're not citizens we're customers, taxpayers, residents). as a matter of fact, the law prohibiting the sale of raw(unpasteurized) milk was recently struck down in Colorado(www.westonaprice.org) using this argument. and, Virginia wineries also were launching a suit against Maryland over the threat that: if they sold cases of wine to folks w/a Md. tag on their cars, Md. would prosecute them. Md. capitulated w/out a trial ever being called to session. and just recently, Md. lawmakers were considering putting a label on cans of foreign crabmeat saying," maryland style", or "not made in maryland" "but were afraid this might raise constitutional" questions or conflicts, i forget the words, but it was an editorial in the evening CRAPITAL, or Md. GAZE-itt. i read it, & i wished i'd SAVED it, but when i called my buddy back two days later w/the bright idea i'd get it, the paper had been thrown out by his wife. this IS important, folks.... they know you can kill 'em w/this tactic, because if they don't give YOU this consideration under the constitution, they can't give it to their buddies, either. they WANT to do business but they don't want you to find out how they control us, they want to pull all kinds of SHADY **** on every one of us, while THEIR guys get the gravy. keep the faith, OAO. :fire: :cuss:

Very simple, they have SWAT and about half the Police in North Las Vegas all standing around, drinking Starbucks, telling you that no private transactions are allowed. Kind of simplified my decision to drive right by. I still can't believe that there were that many guns turned in. Las Vegas is about as bad as it can get in terms of crime but where did all those guns from? I have never heard what types of guns they bought. Maybe people bought BB or pellet guns to trade for a WalMart gift card.

Just returned from the "Buy back" What gets me is that they never owned my gun in the first place, so how can it be a buy back??
Anyhow, I walked away with $50 in cash for the old rusted, pitted and untrustworthy potmetal Rhom .22 revolver. Saw all kinds of garandparent types carrying rifles in plastic bags. Oh the HORRORs of them trading in their late husbands war trophys! Not a big turn out, but I did see the list as of 10:30am, and there was about 20 turned in already. Saw a few .410 shotguns on the list, but didn't have too much of a chance to look. Kind of a Gestapo atmosphere, and I'm a thug turning in my gun. Only to go out and buy ammo or put it towards a finer weapon! :D
Didn't think to ask about a trade up for a better gun instead of the cash though :what:

buy-back...

i stand corrected, if it was on private property, there really isn't anything there for you to do.

Scott, glad you got your $50! I wanted to go just for the hell of it but I got held up at work. Oh well.

Someone told me that in the past BB guns had been bought for $50. Do you know any truth to that?

I went. Turned in 4 POS pistols:

.22 short semi auto w/broken sear spring
.22lr single action Falcon, freezes after 3-4 rounds and requires complete disassembly
.22lr Saturday Night Special revolver, looks plastic, no use for it at all, not worth $50
.32S&W J-Frame knockoff from Brazil, no firing pin bushing, fires once then freezes until disassembly b/c primer blows back into the hole where the bushing should be. The part is not available.

We walked out with $200 cash. We got there just after 10am. There were only about 3 guns on the list before ours. I saw two guys standing outside the fence, was that any of you guys? I saw what might have been a Marlin 60 from a distance, but I already have two of those so I didn't talk to the guy. Didn't see anything else of value in the line. Also didn't see the Bloods and Crips turning in their guns, but I'm sure I saved lives by turning in those 4 junkers

SC guys, check my sig line for group shoot info!

We had a buy back around here a few years ago, and they did have a couple of dealers buy guns from people in line, and told a couple old widows that their husbands luger was worth a $1000, and let them sell it to a gun shop for that. These idiots out there, think buybacks work. They get junk from law abiding people only.
I heard in Austrialia, with their big buy back, they got all sorts of junk guns, the rest were lost in the lake or river, sure.......
A lot of shovels, plastic pipe, and petroleum jelly were bought, and a lot of gardens planted.
And of course crime went up. Gee, didn't the criminals hand in their guns? not!
