This story took about 6 months of effort with CBS News to make happen. It was filmed during a training class at my club last month.

As you watch it, consider these questions . . .

  • Was this a positive story about gun rights?
  • Was it personal - i.e., did it grab your attention and make you identify with Teri?
  • Does this story advance the ground on gun rights and how people view the possession, carry, and use of a gun on the local level? Or was it a negative hit piece on how awful it is (tisk, tisk) to own one?

I know it was factual. We all worked very hard to make sure it was.

If you liked it, share it with a fence-sitter, or a non-gun owning person you know.

do you have a link?
I know of many local dealers and trainers who refuse to talk to the "media" because they have been "edited" to death, the paper was notorious for this before they became a AP reprint. I wish you luck with your story.

Yes.
Yes.
It depends. Many people are already decided one way or the other. For people in the middle, and with an open mind, I think it was a win.

Well done.

A well done video report and not biased to the usual antigun position seen on so many teeeveee reports regarding honest citizens and firearms.

it was a great video, very positive. I liked how it went in depth about why a person would get a permit and that those with the permit generally want to accurate with their firearms and obey the law

Whoever made that happen -- and who clearly did some coaching behind the scenes -- deserves a heap of praise for a job well done. Bravo. Thanks a lot for sharing it.

Not too bad imo...

The female reporter left a bad taste in my mouth in that her introduction and closing statements seemed somewhat alarmist.

The male reporter who actually did the story did pretty well though.

I just have one question - why is the instructor teaching them to shoot with their thumb on (or very close alongside) the slide? I thought the woman was just a newbie, but then the instructor presents with the very same hold...

That strikes me as very poor technique.

I think that it was fairly balanced, perhaps even favorable except for the last part where the woman anchor said that although the people they showed in the report were training in a course to carry, training is not a requirement, which I tool as a message that many people will carry "irresponsibly"?

If you don't like guns you will think "OMG look at those numbers! too many common people carry guns! Who do they think they are?"

If you are on the fence, I don't think you will find it outrageous or bad: "Hmm, I didn't know that a lot of people carry" and "Apparently a victim will no longer let herself be a victim"

If you are concerned with crime it might prompt you to look into it. "If Teri can do it and thousands of others, then maybe I can too"

It is a fact in this state that training is not a requirement. Had the crew not reported that fact, folks might become upset that the story was suggesting training was a prerequisite for the carry license in PA.

I don't have a problem with how she presented the process to get a permit. She was entirely correct in her representation of the process. If you felt she was editorializing on how the process works here, you're reading too much into it.

Other schools teach thumbs up, too. Some thumbs forward.

It's not Clint Smith's latest training video. Rather than debate the shooting technique, or whether this has value for our individual shooting sessions, ask yourself if this is a story you can share with someone in your life who needs to hear this message. Some people just need some encouragement, and to know someone else just like them decided to carry a gun for their own protection before they'll make that choice for themselves.

A few of my club members work for the station. They convinced the news desk to produce the story, and I worked to find an appropriate weekend for the camera crew to do their filming. We all had a part to play in getting an accurate, well-represented story produced.

That's a new one to me!

I think the story was fair. I'm a little surprised that a CBS affiliate would run it, so you guys must have done a good job selling your point of view to the reporter/editor!

I thought it was as positive as you could hope for from CBS...Hard to beleive that was on CBS news show.No doubt ABC or NBC would have found a negative to report about this.

I saw a news story about a gun a week or so ago. It was Chicago's Mayor Daly. A reporter asked if the gun ban was working, the mayor picked a confiscated gun they had on display said something along the lines of "let's stick this one up your *** and see if its working".
