OTTAWA — The Conservative government says its MPs will celebrate after a historic vote to end the long-gun registry Wednesday evening, despite vehement opposition to the move in Quebec and much of urban Canada.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told reporters Wednesday, hours before the vote, that the government’s actions are long overdue.

“It does nothing to help put an end to gun crimes, nor has it saved one Canadian life,” he said.

Quebec

Quebec has said they are taking this to court and not going to comply with the law. More tax $$ wasted in court and head hunting parties by the local PD's looking for firearms violations.

Hopefully our friends in Canada will obtain total victory against this boondoggle.

There is still one more step (although they claim it's a sure thing) but very glad to hear.
Everyone has a right to protect their life, regardless of what other men (or government) say.

I had been planning to go hunting in Canada all of my young life and when the time came for it to happen, this gun hate hit Canada. When this happened, I took Canada off my list of places to ever hunt or visit...although I did relent and cross the border at Niagra Falls in 2006 for 4hrs. I made the determination that Canada would never see a dime of my hunting money and I still feel the same after all of these years. They can have Canada...I don't need it.

I hope that the people get their rights back...but, I still ain't ever going.

There is another thread on this.

It hasn't passed the House and there is still months more before that happens. Although it is expected to pass easily. Plus Quebec has a lawsuit planned as soon as it is passed.

It actually did pass the House, that's what the vote on Wednesday was about.

It does; however, need to pass through the Senate. The Conservative dominated Senate will basically rubber stamp the thing and push it through.

Very good news!

I like the spirit that many Canadians showed when the registration law was first passed, when many of them refused to register their guns. I'm sure it took a lot of courage to stand up for your rights in that way, and they should be admired for it.

I have quite a bit of time on a lake in rural Ontario. (I won't get any more specific than that.)

Off of the top of my head I can think of at least two shotguns and two or three rifles scattered amongst the various cabins. Everyone knows they aren't papered. No one cares.

The local RCMP group ('Mounties') seem to have a unofficial 'don't ask don't tell' attitude about it. Sure, if they arrest you and find an unregistered gun there will be trouble, but if you mind your own business people tend to look the other way.

Edit: I would like to clarify that none of the guns in question belong to me. I fill out the temporary registration paperwork when I cross the border.

I am very happy. I called my local members of parliament during the last election and said my vote goes to the party that supports the dismantling of the long gun registry. The conservatives were the only party to support it - so they got my vote - and as many votes as I could influence withing my circle of friends.

I went to Florida lately and was pleased to see how easy it is to purchase firearms. I was disappointed when I tried to take my wife to a gun range for an afternoon of fun (she asked to go since I was shopping for reloading equipment - approximately 40% cheaper in USA than Canada). The local ranges would not accept us since we were Canadian - and I have my gun licenses in Canada - which are MUCH more restrictive to obtain. Strange but true.

Maybe it is a Florida thing? I hear in other states some ranges rent out machine guns for foreigners (visiting the U.S.) to shoot on their ranges.

It takes all of 5 minutes for an Indiana? Hunting license, and its free. Thats good enough for a Florida range. We had to do the same thing for a French Student that visited us.

Quick question: Hasn't Canada been doing confiscations of previously legal registered guns in order to claim some sort of victory?

The fist time I have ever heard a government official say something like that. I wish our folks would also come to their senses and realize that laws to not deter crime, laws DEFINE crime.
