I'm looking for a rifle to replace my not-so-old Remington 700 sps stainless. Several reasons...I want a little more accuracy, the long barrel is hard to handle in the woods and stand, and I want to swithc to .308. I'm getting 1 to 1.5 inch groups now and would prefer sub moa groups if im gong to upgrade.
Here are the guns on my radar sofar:
Remington 700 sps tactical
Remington 700 vtr
Remington 700 PSS Police Tactical
Remington 700 LTR

Here is my consern...why are the first 2 so much cheaper than the last 2? Will the difference between the first 2 and my 700 be just a style difference? What is the actual difference between the SPS tactical and hte much more expensive PSS?
Thanks
Jason

my advice would be to have it rebarrelled. It will be cheaper and it should be capable of 1/2 moa then with a good barrel and blueprinted action

The SPS is less expensive because of the stock, the PSS and the LTR uses an HS Precision stock while the SPS Tactical uses a Houge overmold stock and the VTR uses a crappy plastic stock.

I'd go with the LTR or the SPS Tactical deciding on what you want.

Rebarreling with a heavy target barrel will shave you groups a little bit, if I were you I would get that barrel free floated (assuming that you haven't tried that already) or get an HS stock or a Bell and Carlson stock (B&C is cheaper, but make great Medalist stocks), or a Houge Overmold These three srock will get the barrel free floated and bed the action with an aluminum bedding block.

The SPS tactical is super accurate. The hogue over molded stock is very quiet and the barrel length would make ir very handy in a box stand. The down side to the this rifle is it is very heavy. Mine weighs 12 pounds with scope and sling. I love the rifle but i dont hunt with it.

If I could only have one rifle for range use and hunting this would proabably be my choice.

Shooting super tight groups is cool when punching paper but i seriously doubt a deer will care if your rifle shoots a 1/2 in group or a 1 1/2 in group when you put a triple shock or a game king through its vitals.

Agreed. Handguns are more my thing. I like rifles, but they are more utilitarian for me. Each one I have is for a specific purpose. Having a cool target rifle and deer rifle in one would be great.

R700 Police hands down. Put a nightforce on it and you have a scary accurate rifle!
