Welcome to THR, JA2327.

I would suggest checking www.gunbroker.com for something that will fill the bill. It will give you some insight as to availability and price range.
Being 17, you would probably have to have a parent or guardian purchase a firearm for you.
Good luck.

semi auto in .243 id say the BAR is top dog, also you could check out remington's 7400 and 750 semi autos. If it were me I'd search hard for an older Springfield M1A in .243 might be more than $1000 but it would be alot of fun.

The only reason that i dont like the bar is bc im looking for the kind of m16 look lol got any other suggestions

Oh Oh why not check out an AR 10 platform then in .243 might be just what you are looking for. DPMS, RRA, Armalite all make good ones.

Sounds to me like you already know what you want. Why don't you try to find one then. There isn't going to be much else out there in .243 anyway.

Yeah I know what I want I just don't know the best place to find it?

If you buy from a place online, or over the phone out of state, you'll need to have the gun sent to an FFL (federal firearms licensed) dealer in your area, to do the transfer legally. I'd start by finding an FFL you like, for a price you like. Depending on where you are, and the amount of competition, they could charge anywhere from 20 to 100 bucks....since it's just filling in a form and calling for a background check, I'd look for the cheapest available.

If you buy from a store in state, no additional FFL required...so don't go for $20 savings online...cause after shipping you'll come out behind (with a $20 FFL fee).

Basically, any gun store worth their salt will probably offer to order any gun you can find online....just get a definitive price before committing.

A semi-auto .243 probably won't be in stock at most stores, so call the stores in your area first. In a two minute conversation you can find out if they have it, if they can get it, how much they charge for it, or how much they'd charge for a transfer (FFL) if you find it elsewhere.

If you tell us where you are, there might be a member nearby who can make a good suggestion on stores or an FFL.

I'd go with a BAR. You won't have to worry as much about legalities, mag caps etc when out hunting. I have a feeling that most game wardens would look down on a 10 round mag unless its legal to use during all on going seasons.

Also, if you get pulled over coming home, you'll get a lot less flack (trust me, at 20 I get pulled over with a shotgun behind me that I forgot to unload the mag after a day of pond jumping, the cop was not very happy with me...)

As far as field conditions, I've never seen our BAR 243 fail. It was my dads first real rifle and he still uses it every time he needs a rifle, I'd still use it if I didn't prefer the wallop that my 30.06 delivered.

While the BAR may not look as cool, it may help to keep you under the radar by not looking so tacticool.

I have no real experience with the AR, but if thats the look your going for, they are pretty accurate.

^ Beat me to it. Remington offers a .243 and a 7mm-08 on an AR platform. They look great and I've heard good things about them. They will be a little over a grand.

As does Remington. You want an "AR 10 type" rifle (looks like an M16 / AR15). You may have to look to the used market to fit this in the budget, but you're not far off of new.

Um I have just used the ars and I really like what they bring to the table

You can have exactly what you want from the Remington, but its going to cost you $1200ish

What is a good site that sells fairly cheap semi auto rifles?

You don't want a cheap rifle, so where to find one doesn't matter!
