Short of it:
Does or did anyone make a self-loading rifle in .243 winchester with an 18" barrel?

Long of it:
Well, i'm to the point that I'm in the market for another rifle. I have all of the basics covered, so I'm to where I can buy what I want and not what I need.

I don't currently own any self loading rifle besides a 10-22, so I was thinking about looking into picking one up in a medium power cartridge. All at once, i have plenty of full size rifles- so now I'm looking for something fairly compact.

Deal is, only SA rifle i can find in .243 is a remington 750 with a 22" barrel.

So does anyone know if there are currently any production semi auto rifles in .243 with an 18" barrel? If not, has anyone ever produced one that I can be looking for in the used market?

And before advising me to consider a different cartridge I will say .243 is a must. Again, I'm to where I can start looking into dream guns, and this is what I'm dreaming of.

You can get AR uppers in just about any caliber. I'm not a big fan of the AR platform, though, so I'd rather have the FAL.

remmington makes one (R-25). I saw one at gander and it was nice.

They also make the 7600 in .243 (pump action)

Saw one at the LGS the other day.

don't forget the old savage 99's, though it is a lever, uses the box/drum magazine. and also don't forget the old winny 99's, or is it 100, that is a handy little semi auto. but if you want it to hold over 4 or 5 rounds, you gotta go
with an AR..

You can make one with an AR-10 receiver. You just need an upper with a 243 chambered barrel.

I would say I wasn't anywhere close to have my bases covered if I owned not semi auto center fire rifles.

That said what is the rifle going to be used for. What are your expectations for it, etc. Without knowing things like that it is hard to make a meaningful recomendation.

I'm looking at a sporting rifle more than something AR or FAL based. Honestly, when I posted this question the black rifles never even crossed my mind.

Looking at recommendations above, the only sporting rifle offered with anything under a 22" barrel is the BAR lightweight, and even then it's still 20".

However, I'm still looking at other options.

I'm not looking to match shoot or anything, just looking for a compact auto loading rifle. Something like the 7400 or 750 fits the bill fine, except for the 22" only .243- but for how cheap they are used, a shortening would be cost effective.

So light handling, self loading sport rifle in .243, 18" barrel, keep the price of the rifle to roughly $1000.

The BLR in .243 is a nice little piece, even lighter handling than the Remingtons, and well less than $1000 in a (really neat) takedown version. Even less if you don't want the takedown.

6 lbs. 8 oz.

...if you don't mind working the lever.

That is really neat, I like it a lot and I don't mind working a lever, but I have enough lever guns already.

That's why I'm in the market for a self-loader.

An aluminum framed ar15 style .243 like Remington's R-25 w/ fluted barrel would make a very light, handleable, and accurate rifle but would run you atleast 1,250.
