Just imagine your mother pulling a nice hot pecan pie out of the oven, then placing it in front you and then you grab a fork and then........ONE OF THOSE DANGED VARMITS COMES AND GRABS THAT PIE OUT OF YOUR HANDS AND TAKES OFF IN A DEAD RUN WITH THE PIE! It is your duty to finish off the beats that do this every year with my pecans, pears, peaches, plums, tomatoes.......
Unfortunately, most species are game animals with established seasons, so hunting is restricted to certain times of the year. That said, I have a problem in my yard and their routine attacking the bird feeder. There were four grays out this morning around my feeder. I resist shooting them, but every now and then, I thin the herd with my pellet gun since a 22 might be a little noisy.
because it's fun! see the article in last months American Hunter about squirrel hunting with a .36 cal blackpowder rifle. also watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHx74_nbZc0
The only snake I know of that eats squirrels outside of possibly Florida would be an adult rattlesnake (canebrake, timber ratller, or other large species).
Shoot 'em- eat 'em. Squirrel is good (I used to frickasee 'em: brown in butter and bake in white wine). Serve with: hash browns, slaw, and beer-AWESOME.
The main reason to shoot squirrel is thats its FUN. Blast them, and that sound when they fall thru the oak leaves and hit the ground is like "OH YEA".
I would sit in an oak grove and listen for them, locate them and bring the 12 ga up and bingo- dinner!!
Squirrels are like apples that jump from tree to tree.
Except you do need to peel, clean, and then toss it in a skillet with boiling grease and fry it for a good few minutes. After that, though, you have a wonderful snack. I like mine crispy.
It's one of the few things in the forest that you can kill and eat in under 20 minutes.
