I'm considering expanding on my long range shooting ability, as well as possibly participating in long range shooting competitions in the future. I've got pre-conceived ideas in what I'm looking for in a precision rifle. However, I'm not entirely sure where to start. Quality of the weapon is a big factor, and so far this is what I WANT in the rifle:

1. .308 (7.62x51 NATO) caliber, as it's easy to find in my area
2. 24-26" heavy contour (bull) barrel
3. Free-floated barrel
4. McMillan A5 or similar type stock
5. Price is not necessarily a factor, but I'd like to keep it between $1,000-$3,000 for a completely basic, stock rifle.
6. I want a bolt action rifle (semi-auto is not out of the question, but I'd prefer a solid bolt action rifle)

So far I've been looking at Savage 10FP, Remington 700P, and various CZ models. I wanted a Les Baer Precision Bolt Rifle, but I checked their website recently and it looks like those are discontinued. I've even considered a DPMS series SASS as a semi-auto alternative.

As for optics, I'd like something that's solid out to 600-800 yards, maybe something that could possibly touch past 1,000 yards. (Adjustable between 6-24X50-56 maybe?) I'm not very experienced with scopes. Until now my experience has been with fixed power Weaver 4X scopes on my hunting rifles (K4) and a redfield 3-9x52 on my AR-15.

If I'm missing any options that fall into my personal specs, please share your opinions. Any input would be greatly appreciated, and I'd like to offer a pre-thank you for any and all input or ideas.

This is a thought. Build it and it will shoot in you price range.
Savage target action trigger is adjustable from 6oz - 1.5lbs.
$5-600
Lilja savage barrel $350-450
Master class stock $1000 fully adjustable
Nikon Monarch 6-24X50 $600
Sinclair F class bi-pod $250
Barrel vise $60
Savage barrel nut wrench $40
$2950give or take

Or you could just buy a stock savage target rifle put a scope on it and shoot. That's basically what team savage did. They had people laughing and talking about it til they started winning match after match.

Remington 700 PSS fits your bill.........

The Remington 700 Police Sharp Shooter (PSS). For years, this rifle has been in service with countless law enforcement agencies across the United States. Based originally on the old Remington 700 Varmint rifle of days gone by, the PSS shows its fine, tack-driving lineage. Over the yeas, the rifle has undergone many minor improvements that have kept it up to date technologically, yet affordable to the average police unit. Moreover, this rifle has led the march for many toward ever increasing accuracy and, in its current form, is quite capable when compared to a custom-built rig, especially because of its reasonable price. Most recently, Remington changed the designation of the PSS to the 700 Police, or 700 P, and has made available a detachable magazine version, the 700 D.M.

I love mine.

Google up John Pierce rifles. His shop is about 5 min. from me and he helped me build a Norma 6 BR that shoots just one little hole. He makes some great action's and won't screw you on the price. Give him a call, he is great to talk to !!!!

with a Shepherd 6-18X40 on it

Given the options I would likely start with a lightly used Remington 700 BDL VSSF in 308 and find a smith that knows these rifles. Tear it down and replace the barrel and true the action. McMillian, Douglas, Hart and a host of others make good barrels. Have the smith put on an 11 degree muzzle crown. Then a good trigger like Timney or similar.

Anyway, that is along the lines of the direction I would take and have in the past.

For a semi-auto I would build on a good AR 10 frame unless you want a M1A type gun..

Gosh I think I would start with a cheaper version of the 700. That VSSF is a nice looking gun and the one I shot, shot really good. Not only that but the VSSF has held its value. Unless your lucky you will likely pay close to what they cost new.

I have a several .308's. Here is one that is what you described and its a factory rifle that comes with a McMillan. FN offer options on theses, mine is a A1. The SPR's have CRF actions. The chrome lined barrels are truly easy to clean. They are turn key and are shooters from the get go.
