I'm considering expanding on my long range shooting ability, as well as possibly participating in long range shooting competitions in the future. I've got pre-conceived ideas in what I'm looking for in a precision rifle. However, I'm not entirely sure where to start. Quality of the weapon is a big factor, and so far this is what I WANT in the rifle:
1. .308 (7.62x51 NATO) caliber, as it's easy to find in my area
2. 24-26" heavy contour (bull) barrel
3. Free-floated barrel
4. McMillan A5 or similar type stock
5. Price is not necessarily a factor, but I'd like to keep it between $1,000-$3,000 for a completely basic, stock rifle.
6. I want a bolt action rifle (semi-auto is not out of the question, but I'd prefer a solid bolt action rifle)
So far I've been looking at Savage 10FP, Remington 700P, and various CZ models. I wanted a Les Baer Precision Bolt Rifle, but I checked their website recently and it looks like those are discontinued. I've even considered a DPMS series SASS as a semi-auto alternative.
As for optics, I'd like something that's solid out to 600-800 yards, maybe something that could possibly touch past 1,000 yards. (Adjustable between 6-24X50-56 maybe?) I'm not very experienced with scopes. Until now my experience has been with fixed power Weaver 4X scopes on my hunting rifles (K4) and a redfield 3-9x52 on my AR-15.
If I'm missing any options that fall into my personal specs, please share your opinions. Any input would be greatly appreciated, and I'd like to offer a pre-thank you for any and all input or ideas.
