Hello,
I have been on the prowl for a stainless .22 with a 16" barrel in either bolt action or lever action. It has to have a magazine or preferably a tube. Most all the youth models are single shot. I will be using the open sights, so nice ones are a must (I don't like the stamped bendy rear sight). I'd like to keep it under $300 out the door. This will be a hiking gun.

I just tried out a Marlin XT-22YSR (synthetic and stainless) and love the features, but that fancy kids stock really is made just for kids, the comb is way to high for adult cheek. The absolute perfect bolt rifle is the Marlin XT-22YS1 (wood and stainless), but it is only a single shot.

As far as lever actions, I can seem to find anything that is short. The Marlin 39 is awesome, but the barrel is 24" and the thing weighs 6.5 lbs.!

Buy the XT22 youth model and put an adult stock from an XT22 on it.. should drop right in.

Marlin made a carbine model of the 39, but it's pricey to find one.

Did Henry update the AR-7 recently? The "sturdy steel barrel covered in tough ABS plastic" sounds a little cheap. Are the sights decent and made of steel? Is this model an improvement over the last generation that was considered very cheaply made?

I have to say, it looks nice!

After a bit of reading, I think the Henry Rifle is not for me. Its design serves its secondary functions (storage) well, but with harm to it's primary function (shooting).

I REALLY like the stainless pump Taurus M62CSS, but since they were discontinued last year, they are becoming hard to find. It's a bummer, because this is EXACTLY what I was looking for...

oh wow, I didn't catch that they were discontinued. shame. I always wanted one myself. just never got around to having the money at the right time.

Not a bolt- or lever-action, but the current Marlin 70PSS Papoose would otherwise be perfect for what you describe. I have an older wood-and-blued-steel 70P and love it.

And if you wanted better but still open sights, Tech Sights makes a military-style protected rear aperture and front blade for the Marlin .22s that will also fit the Papoose.
