Unique and super cool? The H&K P7 9mm would be my first choice, perhaps with a matte hard chrome finish. Accuracy, reliability and safety in one package. All steel, with a legendary reputation. Why else was it the choice of so many good police departments? Ammo is plentiful and reasonable. Second choice would be a .45 Colt Commander. However, by the time you have the smith tune it for its potential in terms of both accuracy and reliability, it is a high price. You might wish to consider the new Desert Eagle 1911 in the shorter barrel version. I have not fired one, but if the action is as accurate and reliable as its big brother's (standard size 1911) you have a real bargain. It is made of quality steel on CNC machinery (computer controlled) and has excellent fit with tight tolerances. The Israelis make it, and they do know a few things about quality firearms. If you get any 1911, please do not get cheap magazines. This is a critical component in your weapon's reliability. I like the Tripp and Wilson models, with a slight edge to the former, due to better fit and finish. Neither has ever failed me in FTL, FTE or other malfunction. There are other quality magazines advertised out there, but test any magazine with your carry loads before you rely on it. Ammo for the .45 is plentiful, but costs a bit more than the 9mm. Good luck with your choices. Keep us posted.
