I am not sure Leupold quality is what it used to be, though the warranty is nice. I had a VXII give out on me, another came with an AO that was sloppy. I would put the Weaver 2-7 on it. I have not had one of those fail on anything yet including hard charging semi auto 308's And they are brighter than all but the VX3

All other things being equal...are fixed scopes more sturdy/reliable than variable scopes?
Yes they are, fewer moving parts equals fewer parts to fail. A rimfire well hardly be a recoil monster and about anything well have a long life on it.

I shoot my .22lr's from 25ft to 200yds. I use a adjustable objective scope, the Mueller 4.5-14X40 APV.

Been reading lots of good reviews of the cheap Simmons such as Academy carries.

Looked at a Nikon Prostaff this morning, very nice scope. Would like this one but am getting close to buying one of the cheaper simmons as it will serve most of my purposes and if it breaks, I still have the good iron sights.

Look at the simmons 22mag scopes. Thats what I have on my 10/22's are they are very reliable. I believe they are the 3-9x40. $50 if I remember correctly. dead on at 100 yards if you do your part.

I went fixed 4x with my marlin .22LR. I go fixed for most of my long guns that I intend to use at under 400m.

Academy Sports had a Weaver 3x9 for around $100.

If that is the "rimfire" weaver 3-9x, that is an absolute steal. I would not mount a non-rimfire scope on your 10/22.

Simmons is the cheaper line; Weaver is made by the same company and is their better line. The Weaver 4x Rimfire is excellent as is their 2.5-7x rimfire scope. The Weaver 3-9x rimfire is an AO scope. All are excellent.

Have not tried one of the newer Nikon rimfire line as of yet. The Prostaff line is generally their cheaper line of scopes.

Backing up a bit, choose the scope for your kind of shooting and budget. I swore by 4x rimfire scopes for years and in fact have one on my 10/22. It is very compact and quick for small game hunting. I love the Weaver 2.5-7x scope and highly recommend it. Leupold rimfire scopes are excellent also.

It you are just going to be punching holes in paper, go with a 3-9x rimfire scope or higher powered AO scope. But I doubt that your 10/22 justifies a really great scope unless it shoots awfully special versus the typical factory 10/22 which are just so so.

I have a Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 on my Target...I like it a lot. Actually, it is the cheapest scope that I have so it found it's way onto the best rimfire I have. I have dumped all of the cheapo scopes that I had...at least, the ones that had not already dumped me.
