Me and the little lady are new to the LA area, and we'd like to go out and site in some of the toys.

Are there any good outdoor shooting areas in the los angeles area? anyone want to set up a trip sometime in early june?

Back home (San Luis Obispo County) we used to have a rule about shooting around highways, had to be 500 feet (or yards, I can't remember exactly) away when discharging a firearm. Also had to have the owners permission on private property, and if it was BLM you just didn't want to go if the sherrifs kid wasn't with you.

Is it cool to just go out blasting?

Hey Ajax22,
I'm a little south of you down in Orange County. I occassionally go to Buro Canyon near Azusa or the San Gabriel Gun Club, also in Azusa. There is also the Lyttle Creek range near Fontana. Most of the time, though, I just drive out to a little canyon near Palm Springs to do my shooting, or maybe up off of the 395. I prefer to have fewer rules.

Oh, Ajax22.
Most BLM land is legal to shoot on, but some of it closer to the roads or towns is off limits. I apply a rule that if it is BLM land, I cannot see a paved road or house and the only creatures around are gun nuts or rattlesnakes, then it is OK to shoot. If you have any doubts, just call the local BLM station. Most of the rangers are pretty helpfull (you can always find a jerk, but for the most part they are alright).

As far as I know, theres Angeles Range, Burro Canyon, and San Gabriel Gunclub, Prado, and Raahauges for outdoor shooting ranges.

West Oak Gunclub is slightly further north I believe.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll have to check those ranges out. If anyone knows of little out of the way places to shoot (that palm springs canyon sounded pretty neat) I'd like to go out and spend a few rounds just having fun.

Ranges are great for sighting in and practicing, but for having fun its hard to beat the great outdoors.

Just fyi, due to frequent fires in the Angeles Natl Forest, ranges prohibit steel core and steel jacketed ammunition.

When I lived in Anza (not Anza Borrego) we had several places where we liked to shoot. Go up above Hemet and you will find several places to shoot. When you get up on top, turn left and there are many places to shoot.

Ajax, out around Mohave/Cal city is good shooting.Pine tree canyon is about 5 miles past the turn-off for lake isabella.Wide open spaces, shoot all you want, just please pack out all targets, the water district would love to close the area,people/idiots occasionally shoot at the concrete abutments holding up the Ca acquaduct(don't do it), and be watchful of moto-cyclists.
When I don't want to drive that far,I go to Lytle creek.
