Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County.

The source is marginal, and the claim bold. Still, if there's any credibility to it, it raises a lot of questions about Sheriff Dupnik's handling of a known nutjob.

(The story also links to a Reuters article that supports at least some of the claims.)

I made this same point in the comments section of my local newspaper. If any ire should be raised and calls for investigation made, they should be toward finding out about Jared Loughner's previous interactions with the Pima County Sheriff's office, and whether his mother's employed with Pima County asserted any influence on the procedings. It sounds like there were ample opportunities for this young man to enter the system, get mental help, and at least preclude him from buying a legal gun.

I was ignored in favor of more political mudslinging by all parties.

I gotta be honest, the source of that information is pretty sketchy.

If someone has a more reliable source for this story let me know and we can talk about opening this up again, but this is sort of "I heard from a guy who knows a guy".

May all be true, but some more reputable source first OK? PM me if there is one.
