Some of you may remember me posting about my bargain basement purchase ($319 delivered to FFL) of an ATI .45ACP 1911 Commander and how much I like the gun. Also how I am willing to spend a few buck to upgrade it in ways that will benefit me. So far I have had installed an ambi safety (lefty!) and had the slide milled by Primary Machine (Morgan City, LA) for a Burris Fast Fire III red dot optic. Mounting the optic via the rear sight dovetail just wouldn't hold it tight even after I had the slide drilled so that longer screws could be run down into it. The milled mounting system is holding fast.
But that is not why I am writing. At first I was skeptical of the accuracy I was seeing, thinking it was just a fluke. But range trip after range trip I am seeing crazy good results. Today I shot 20 rounds of crappy ammo into a 1 inch circle at 7 yards. And at 20 yards the 20 round group I shot was less than 4 inches. Very similar to what I have been seeing. True the gun is tight as a drum in both barrel to bushing to slide fit and slide to frame fit. There is no slack whatsoever. It was nearly like that initially, but after the Cerakoting of the slide as part of the milling job, the parts feel like a welded unit. Yet the gun operates perfectly.
I made the mistake of trying out a friend's Ed Brown the other day, and oh man, that trigger was something. So smooth I couldn't believe it. My trigger works well (obviously) but it is no Ed Brown by a long shot. So I am thinking of having some trigger work done maybe early next year. The occasional flier I shoot is always due to a flinch from having to deal with a less than perfect trigger. If I could get rid of those, I could really turn in some outstanding results.
