Howdy all,

My father is planning on finally buying a SxS after coveting one since boyhood. He is, however, a bit on the frugal side and doesn't want spend too much on it. He is looking for a SxS 12-gauge, 26 or 28" barrels, single trigger.

Right now, the leader in his price range (sub-$800) is the CZ Ringneck. People generally seem to like these and he handled one and was pretty happy with it. The drop wasn't quite right for him, but other than that it seemed pretty good. He also looked at a Stoeger, but wasn't impressed, even at the lower price.

The gun that best fit him (aside from some rather expensive Italian guns in Cabela's gun library) was a Ruger Gold Label. I don't recall if it was the pistol or straight stock version, but that was an almost fit. Unfortunately, at $1700, it's about double his budget.

So, after that lengthy lead-in, my questions are: Should he grab the CZ Ringneck and make the best of it or is is there another shotgun in his price range he should consider? Is there something that is closer in fit to the Ruger for a better price? I'm aware of the shotgun Remington imports, but have been unable to locate one locally to inspect. Is it worth trying to track one of these down?

Thanks!

I'm not real knowledgable but I saw a CZ autoloader the other day and was very impressed. On the other hand I was skeeting the other day and there was a guy with a Rem o/u who said it was nothing but trouble. He's had to send it back for repairs three times already. I wasn't at all impressed with the look and feel of it.

Not alot of hands on facts but just my impressions

Ringneck is actually a Huglu if I am not mistaken. A friend has the Huglu version and is very pleased with it. Great shotty for the money IMO.

Jorg,

The Remington guns you're referring to are the "Spartan" brand. I've handled these and although they're nice, they are still a bit expensive for the quality. I think he'd be much happier with the CZ Ringneck. I've wanted one of these for a long time, but I probably should limit myself to one gun a year. :D

I have a CZ ringneck.
Do a search for the whole writeup. I've got 1000+ through this one, and had 5000+ through the first one. (it broke, they replaced it)
Great shotgun.
nice feel, pretty, works well.
A fine SxS for the money.

Ringneck is nice. So is the Bobwhite.

Definitely check out DeHaan shotguns. Also made by Huglu, but to a different set of specs.

If you want to go lower in price, Stoeger makes some good shotguns for cheap. I know a few guys with Stoeger O/Us that have seen thousands of rounds in the field and at the range with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for all the replies, I've forwarded them off to him. Will let you know what happens. :)

Edited to add:

I just got a call from dad and you DeHaan guys are in big trouble. The decision just got much more complicated for him. It looks like he's going to get a Huglu, just not sure which one.
