Up at the club today coaching one of my two h.s. trap team granddaughters. Looked in the trash and what did I find among the junk empty hulls? 100 once fired Federal paper hulls.
Best shooting first shot reload shells yet and, they smell great. Somebody has money. Shoot papers once and toss them. I now have a stash almost enough to load a flat.

I agree with liking the smell. I hate reloading the things though. My press doesn't like them, and I don't feel like further tinkering to dial them in, plus the appropriate wads are getting harder to find.

I've gotten some over the years. A local club usually has a flat or 2 as prizes for their fun shoots. Old stock Fed Champion from the early 2Ks, they reserve them for this purpose. Sometimes they dole out a couple boxes, sometimes a whole flat. Usually some folks are tickled to get my empties! Didn't see them out last year, so I think they may have been put into service as a casualty of the ammo shortage.

Some people think they have less recoil.
I did shoot a lot of them in the early 90's when my youth club was associated with Federal Cartridge and got factory seconds for $1/box and free clays. The good old days when ammunition and sporting goods companies paid more than lipservice to youth shooting! I can attest that they felt somewhat different in recoil, but not necessarily softer, than the Gold Medal XL that we also got at times. Certainly less sharp than the discount "game load" or 1pz trap and field loads of the day that were 3.25 DE loads. Those came into our supply chain at times too, and except for a couple of kids that thought louder was cool, they were not popular.

Way back when…. loaded a lot of champions on a 650 jr. That’s all we shot. Used to be 200 rounds every Sunday, sometimes more depending on how the day went. I recall it was AA12S powder. I didn’t have a problem with paper hulls. The biggest issue was scotch tape on the burn holes so the powder would stay put.

Actually, it is an old cult thing. Something from your youth (my youth was many decades ago) plus the fact that the first plastic cases were hard to reload.
My Grabber hates them so I dig out the old 650 when I get enough.
I learned to love them years ago when I used them for hunting loads. Biodegradeable. I was green before green as cool.
