Looking to get into a 9mm for range fun and 3 gun competition. I currently shoot a RIA Match .45 and really like it, I just want a 9mm in the stable.

Anyone have one? Would love to hear pros and cons.

Thanks
Adam

I've got an M&P 9L which is basically the same gun except for sear (and I've upgraded mine with the Apex sear).

Very, very good gun for me. I shoot USPSA Production with it and absolutely love it. Mine is very accurate and feels perfect in my hand. There are some reports of some issues with accuracy for he 9mm ones, though I think the recent production models have had this corrected with a different twist rate (and mine never had any issues).

I'm really digging the Pro 9L C.O.R.E. so far. Even though the trigger is very good, the reset is not, and the hinge is starting to bug me a bit. I'm thinking of putting in the Apex FSS kit.

But I'm shooting it in a handgun match in a couple of weeks (with the RMR installed, so Open division LOL :D ) and we'll see how that goes.

Depending on the price you're paying, you might be better off with a M&P 9L and adding Apex Tactical parts.

While the Pro has a different sear, it isn't as nice as the Apex sear and it doesn't come anything close to the Apex FSS...which is very 1911- like

The newer M&P9 barrels now come with a faster twist and more fitted barrel hood to address their earlier accuracy issues...I have a M&P9 FS and don't have any accuracy complaints. However, they haven't upgraded the extractor, which is optimized for the .40. If you start having problems, Apex makes a 9mm specific extractor.

What you do gain with the Pro is the fiber optic front sight blade which is very nice. I had to buy an aftermarket Dawson Precision one...but I went with a narrower blade when I upgraded

I carried a 5" M&P Pro as my duty gun before switching to 1911s. The Pro is okay. It does have a better trigger than a stock M&P.

However, I put the APEX D/CAEK into the M&P9c that I carried as a back-up. I thought the APEX parts gave the compact a better trigger than the Pro Series trigger.

The hickok45 video on youtube is impressive to say the least. The S&W M&P9 5'' seems a very nice gun.

I've got two 5" 9mm Pro's that I bought this year, one for range/IDPA, and the other set up for HD with SF X400 light/laser. Prior to this I was shooting CDP (Les Baer) and ESP (Walther PPQ), I didn't own a SSP pistol.

Both of mine have been reliable, the triggers are better than a stock M&P. Both of mine started rough, but smoothed out and are now what I consider to be "pretty good". I did a little polishing, especially around/on the FP block. They're not 1911 good though. Both of mine are 2013s, and the accuracy is good with my 147grain reloads. With the 147s the recoil is mild, pretty easy to run plates, the weight up front keeps the muzzle down. The ergonomics are pretty good, I'm running the medium back-strap on mine. The slide release looks small, but it works, and its positioned just right for me, zero issues with my standard thumbs FWD grip unlike my PPQ which caused me to modify my grip some.

I may or may not go the APEX route with my range "Pro", I'm going to continue shooting it as is for a while. I did change the sights out for Dawson's; FO front, and adjustable rear. The folding trigger bothers me, except when I'm shooting live, then I don't even notice it.

The only issue I had initially was finding magazines, but now have 11 of them after buying 2-4 at a time when I could find them. For a holster I went with a Bade Tech, which is my 3rd holster from them, zero complaints with their stuff.

From what I've read, the 9L has been discontinued for the 5" Pro, so you'd be looking used to go that route.
