Has anyone seen or fired S&Ws new Shield in 45ACP? I saw one review on YouTube that was highly supportive of the new pistol. Any comments would be appreciated. I have a full sized 45 M&P which I like and may consider buying the new Shield.

We've had two. The first one sold in two hours. The other one came in yesterday, I was off today, so I don't know if it's still there or not.

They are really nice; the grip is MUCH better than the regular Shields, in my opinion. The trigger was almost Performance Center good, too. How they got 7 rounds of .45 in a mag that small is beyond me.

I just saw this post so I thought I would tell you about the one I just bought. On the range trip yesterday, I started with 230 gn FMJ federals, then several mags of 230 FMJ and 185 gn hand loads from Magnus. No problems. I then tried some 185 gn LSWC hand loads from Missouri Bullets. Again, no problems. Finally, I fired a mag of 185 gn Hornady Critical Defense. Accuracy was good and felt recoil was a little less than I expected. I got the model with the thumb safety because that is what I am accustomed to. When I first started carrying, some three decades ago, my carry gun was a 1911 locked, cocked with the thumb safety engaged. Thumbing the safety off after acquiring a target is a habit I learned in training. The only negative thing, very minor, is the texture of the grip is a bit too aggressive in my opinion. I plan to add a set of Talon rubber grips in the future. I've already ordered a holster from Hidden Hybrid.

I own a 9mm Shield and got to try the 45ACP version at the range the other day. I was very impressed with it. I was shooting it at 25 yards and it was very easy to shoot accurately. I got all 8 shots within a group the size of the palm of my hand.

I didn't shoot mine that day, but the recoil of the 45 didn't feel any worse. The ergonomics on these guns are outstanding. They feel like a much bigger gun when you shoot them, yet are light and compact to carry.

I like the format and so I investigated XD-S and Kahr P45/CW45. Together wth the Shield, these three are the only slim .45 on the market outside of 1911 compacts (and Boberg XR45-S, obviously).

The XD-S has recoil amplified because of the shape of its grip. I like its features and I would love to have one despite its weight, but it hurts to shoot, so it's not fun at all. Note that many people shoot XD-S fine and it's all down to your compatibility with it.

The Kahrs have the most ergonomic grips, although it does not look like it in pictures. The design looks blocky and straight, but it's the easiest to shoot. The triggers have long travel, which I actually think is an advantage for safety reasons. However, my P45 required too much tinkering to make it run properly, and even so it cannot be trusted completely.

As an aside, Kahr also makes a smaller series, PM45/CM45. Neither S&W nor Springfield ship a version that's comparable to that pocket subcompact. It's basically PKO45 sized, just thicker.

Shield's grip is thinner than Kahr's, and it feels more like XD-S. However, S&W made every effort to shape it in a conforming fashion, so it's not much worse than Kahr. It may be better for many people. The gun is fully reliable out of the box. The only downside for me is, the magazine release is not adequately protected with overmolding, so I tend to drop magazines accidentally. Unfortunately, I do not expect S&W ever to come with a different mold line. I suppose one could create a barrier around that button from JB Weld.

Because Kahr refused to supply flush magazines for their .45 ACP line (although they did for 9mm & .40), and because Shield uses a semi-staggered magazine, the grip of a Shield when loaded has exactly the same size as CM45, but capacity is 1 round larger (6 versus 5). Of course if you're really concerned about that, you should rock Springfield XD Mod.2, Glock 30S, or SiG P320. But otherwise hey, a free round. It's like MagGuts +1 from the factory on the Shield.

Bought mine on Oct 26 (election scare, don't you know.) I've put 107 rds of WWB through it since then. No hiccups, no failures, controllable recoil, and is small and flat enough for pocket carry. My SIL has a Shield 9 which I liked but this is a great improvement in .45ACP. Recommended. I paid $429 for mine--a little high if you look around--but well worth it IMHO.

Wait, there is a 45 Shield now? I must get to the LGS to check this one out. I really like my Shield 40.

It came out last spring I believe. It was a surprise to a lot of people.

I'd love to hear someone compare the .40 Shield to the .45 Shield. I'd bet the latter is much easier to shoot accurately. The irony is they both have the same round capacity.

It was strange, but then the .45 version is about 1/4" taller. It's very obvious when you grab them. I can easily get a 3 finger grip on flush mag .45.
