M1 30-06

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wanted A MAX 168s for my Browning High Wall B78 or 1885 if you will. I found some M1 ammo, Which I have now. I read on one of my hand loading sites that there was a lot of pressure associated with them. Said bolt actions may be able to feed them, I d of course need to know how mine will fare Thanx

In fact, "Garand"-compliant ammunition is generally moderate pressure with medium burn rate powders.

Relax & shoot it. ;)

AMax 168s will slam you and your rifle a whole lot harder than any ammo loaded to safe levels for use in an M1.

The 30-06 M1 Garand receiver will handle any standard 30-06 load.

But, with modern powders when used in the 30-06, the port pressure in the M1 is too high and there is a real risk of damaging the M1's operating rod (op rod).

So, any factory 30-06 ammunition that is labeled as Garand safe, will work just fine in a 30-06 hunting rifle.

But, most modern 30-06 hunting ammunition is not suitable for the M1 Garand without the use of pressure relief plug such as the Schuster on the M1's gas system.

um... no hornady loads Amaxs specifically for 30-06 and call it M1 match.

to the OP. M1s have a bit of a picky gas system which needs a very specific amount of pressure at a specific point during the ignition/propulsion process which requires powders that burn a specific rate. there is no load that an M1 can take that a bolt action can not also take.

The GI load's chamber pressure runs about 47,000 to 49,000 psi. Most hunting loads run about 50,000 to 55,000 psi. Roughly.

4895 is slightly faster burning than 3021 and definitely faster than 4064 or H414. Thus the different pressure curve of the slower powders (and at higher pressure) creates a pressure overload at the gas port of the Garand.

SFAIK, the odds are against any harm from just a few shots, but protracted use has been known to bend op rods. Thus the "tunable" gas plug.
