I was just at my uncle's house - this particular uncle is like the prototypical short, skinny, scrappy, absolutely insane brawling Marine, shameless womanizer and champion drinker. You know the type - one of those guys. Anyway, over Martinis and a lot of off-color banter, he asks me if I liked the beautiful, mint-condition Korea-era M1 Garand rifle that he was showing me earlier. I told him I loved it.

He said, "It's yours,"

I think my year has officially been made.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Congrats on the M1. Cherish that rifle. Some folks don't want a gun that has been used to take a life, so don't think of the ones it took think of the ones it saved. Your uncle may have been one of the latter. Wish I could have found one of the M1's my dad used in WWII before he passed. He would have loved it. Enjoy and cherish the M1.

You have been blessed with one of the finest combat arms ever used. Accurate, reliable, and tough as nails. I love my M1A but the M1 is tougher--just watch your thumb if ever doing an inspection-lol, wc

Attaboy!! Hope you at least tried to hug this Marine before he floored you!! ;) I have a great website for ammo (only .50 a round :() if your interested.

Are you going to shoot it or put it away?

if your uncle has another M1 lieing around... tell him I'm his long lost nephew.

How old is this Uncle? I may be interested. Just sounds like my kind of guy.

Oh, I'm going to shoot it alright, but keep it really, really, really clean.

Uncle is like 77 but he's in crazy good shape for a guy his age and could probably kick my ass easily.

Now you know is considered rude to talk about such a prize without posting photos of it... So lets see some pics of it already!

Don't have a camera over here, and I don't actually get the rifle in my possession for a few weeks - he's going to come to Indiana and give it to me there, after I get home.

only prob I have ever had with it is a magnet will attract to it... so some ranges will not let you shoot it.

Be SURE to get photos of the two of you together...with the rifle. Sort of "change of the guard" ceremoney. Then when you hand it down...more pictures that can go with the gun. Think about three or four generations from now...cool!

Also...we do need to see this gun! must have a picture thread!

Mark.

heard some bad things about that greek surplus ammo on that CMP site...what sayest thou?
I love the stuff. It seems to be even more consistent and accurate than the Lake City M2 Ball that I used to shoot, and the Lake City ammo was good.

Woooow. What a guy.

So I'm curious... is this THE rifle that he used in combat? And what is the policy for soldiers keeping their (semi-automatic) issued weapons? Do you have to be a certain rank to be able to keep it?

I don't think it was his combat rifle, it looks like it's in way too good condition externally to have been used in combat. I'm not sure where he got it, whether he brought it back from his service or what.
