Hey guys, I'm in the process of selling off a number of my milsurps (buying older stuff instead) and I've reached the point where I'm putting my M1 Garand up on the market. I was hoping to get people's feedback on value so I can put it up for sale or a reasonable price. It has a SA receiver that was built in Sept 1943 and an HRA bolt and barrel (from 1953). The butt stock may be a CMP replacement, or the cartouche is simply too faded to see. I'm planning on selling with a Utica Cutlery bayonet (undated, so 1942 production). I was also wondering what 200 rounds on enbloc clips would go for these days. Any help you guys can give me on putting a value to the rifle would be much appreciated.

The best way to get a fair price is to sell it on one of the internet auction sites (I'd suggest either www.auctionarms.com or www.gunbroker.com). Lots of collectors will see it, and all but one will bid as high as they are willing to go.

If you don't feel like you can do it yourself, there are several consignment shops who will do it for you, for a percentage of the resulting sale.

There's really no good way to know what the price should be in advance.

That's a nice-looking rifle BTW...
 
The CMP is selling service grades for about $600 and 200 rounds (not in clips) for $98/200 plus tax. From what I understand Garands as well as '06 ammo sell for considerably more from other sources.
 
If you were buying this from the CMP, you would get a 1950's era rifle for $625, I think the baynet would be $150 or so and $100 for the ammo. Your wartime receiver is probably worth more, but I doubt much more since you have a newer barrel and bolt and a new stock.
 
With the bayo, you would likely get between $800-$1000 at auction. Auctions always have a wild card element. Sometimes you will have to relist it 3 times to get a minimum bid and others it will sell after a 3 way bidding war drives the price higher than your "buy it now" was. The ammo is worth about $100-$130 and the clips about $1.5-$2 each.
 
Thanks for the information guys. So far that's all jiving with what I was thinking. I've got it listed on Armslist for the moment, but I'll put it (and the others I'm selling) on Gunbroker as well in the near future. At the moment I have it on Armslist on the upper end, but if I don't get any bites, I'll start dropping it. I'll watch that one auction, thanks for the link MikeJackmin! This was a CMP rifle. Is it worth more if I state that in the auction or would that tend to drive prices down since people will just decide to go get one from the CMP? Any other inputs you guys might have are very welcome. Thanks again for all the help.
 
I've seen them go for a little more on a consignment base with a local shop. obviously the shop will take a cut, but I've seen as much as 1000-1100 for a ww2 era receiver and a buck a round for m2 ammo in en blocs.
 
Clear ,detailed, up close pictures will get you top dollar. Just a few pics of the rifle and you probably wont get any bids

That's some good advice. I was able to add more photos to my Gunbroker sale but armslist keeps you pretty limited.
 
You have two pics of the rifle , whoisgoingto drop that kind of money with no more information than that on the rifle?Even with more detailed pics I doubt it would sell at that price.
"If" you give a good detailed description of every part along with very good detailed pics of mafor parts, realistically you may get $800-$850
 
The WWII receiver has that cool factor but in the end it's a mixmaster rifle. $650 to 725. The bayonet adds $125 to 150 and the 30-06 surplus ammo is 50-60 cents a round plus $2 for each enbloc. There are a ton of Garands out there right now. And. there are repro bayonets to compete with. Yours looks very nice but there is a lot of competition. Good luck. kwg
 
When I looked before there were only two. Still not near enough detailed pics or info for that kind of money. If you search the completed auctions you will see many other rifles in like condition selling for much less. JMO

I'll steadily drop the price if there's no offers. I'm not in a desperate bind for money (this is just to fund other firearm interests) so there's time.
 
In case anyone else is selling something similar in the semi-near future. The rifle sold for $900 and the ammo separately for $150. I probably could have held out longer for more, but I think this was a good deal for all involved. It gave me the funds I needed to pick up a Winchester 1886, so I'm very pleased (modern production one of course, the originals are $2500+).
