Follow up on my FinnM39 from another thread.
Took the old soldier back out today (1942 SAKO Izzy hex) and set targets to 100 yards. Ammo used was surplus Czech heavy ball. Rifle was fired while rested on bags, on a concrete shooting bench.
First thing I noticed was how much more uncomfortable the recoil became, compared to my initial firing of the rifle last week from an unsupported sitting position. I slipped a rubber baby buggy bumper over the butt to make testing it less painful.
- First 4 shot group was a little high and a little to the right. 3+" vertical string. Turns out the rear sight slide (elevation) was creeping forward after each shot. It will not engage until its moved up to the 300 meter mark...
- Second 4 shot group was much better with me resetting the elevation slide to 1.5m after each shot. Three of four rounds hit within 1.25" of each other. The forth was a flier that expanded the group to 2.3 inches. Note * That set of four shots had a one split case in the mix, I am calling that one the flier.
- Third test wasn't for grouping, but just for fun. 4 shots at the 11" steel gong at 200 yards. I was pretty suprised when my first attempt set that gong a swinging! Managed to ring it 3 times out of four with the irons! I was a proud papa at that moment and was really wishing there had been some others around to see it happen.
So this rifle is for sure a keeper. The thing shoots better than my 4 year old Marlin 336 30-30. I like it !
